What experiences/advice do you have with orienteering and land navigation? What good compasses and trails have you seen?
I recently began practicing land navigation skills with topographical maps and compass. I've only explored Florida trails so far, but I'm hoping to get out West to more diverse terrain with a Cammenga tritium 3h lensatic I have coming in.

I taught orienteering and land nav in the Rockies. It's easy to learn. My only advice is to practice it in as many varied terrains and weather conditions as often as you can. Also, you'll probably learn how to pace but it's pretty useless on anything but easy terrain. I never pace anymore. Always look ahead and look at your compass often. You need to get to the point that a topo map automatically looks like a 3 dimensional map. Maps are not perfect.

You're wrong in that. Quite the opposite, it's most useful in rough terrain with thick vegetation, and especially when it's dark.

Where can I buy quality topo maps?

And I mean legit maps, not internet screenshots or print outs, and something made of actually durable paper that doesn't disintegrate in 5 seconds when it gets a bit wet.

I am also looking for a good pouch/map book/folder to keep them in.

OP here, I have been using maps from https://mapstore.mytopo.com/ . They are proper U.S. geological survey maps.

You can get them here as well as older maps (15 minute). Also, the digital copy is free.

If you are near a National Forest, you can go to one of the ranger stations and buy paper copies of maps in that region.

Laminate them! And fold into nice sections to minimize random creases and so you can work on an area without having the whole map out flopping about
