I am looking for a good map case to keep my shit organized and out of the elements. I found this Miltec one on Varusteleka for 17.99. It is cheap and appears to be good so I might order it soon unless I can be convinced to get a different product.

What peripherals should I get to go with it? Anything in addition to the usual markers/pens/protractors?

A map case? Christ, the LARPing is completely out of control on this board. Order/print out your topo map (note: you need to know what you're doing a bit to preserve scale when printing it yourself), section it with an Xacto knife, laminate the sections with matte lamination pouches (can be done with a clothing iron and cover sheet, don't need a laminator), trim the excess, then use a rubber band or two to make a bundle of your map leaves. Presto, waterproof map you can draw on with a grease pencil or erasable/permanent marker. A base plate compass and maybe a scale/ruler protractor such as picrel are the only other things you'll need. All of this will snap into the rubber band bundle.

You strike me as the kind of dipshit who decides he's going to acquire something, gets really excited, and then consooms every conceivable accessory to go along with it. You do you, but over 90% of /out/ relies entirely on their phone GPS; the few of us who can navigate don't buy pretentious mapping accessories. It's the navigation equivalent of buying goggles, a cashmere scarf, and lambskin driving gloves to go with your new car.

What kind of terrain are you navigating? I've been stamping around mostly flat South Eastern US woodlands.

I found that I enjoy having less things to sift around with in general. So I never messed with a map case, but it looks like it might make for some cool camping gear.

I would definitely just laminate it if you're going off the beaten path.

That's shit because not waterproof and too big and heavy, and you don't need all the extra stuff. You want your maps on your chest pod/rig or otherwise mounted to your backpack so you can get to it with one hand with an additional security lineyard because you can lose maps irretrievably in high winds. It happened to me.
You want pic related. If you want to use it at -20C it should be TPU free because that plastic can crack.

They don't last forever if you fold and unfold them 40 times a day. But just one has served me on all my expeditions even for several months. They can get little holes though that you have to tape up.

I have a sheaf of map sections, chart pens, a grease pencil and my compass in a map case; it weighs fuck all, it wasn't expensive, it keeps shit organised when I'm in camp or for most of the time when it's in the closet. Simpler, sure, but not actually lighter weight. All that matte laminate almost certainly weighs more than the scrote tote for your map, but the difference is I can use my map in the rain or drop the fucking thing in a puddle and it'll be fine. It's a ruggedness concern.

I won't. My ligaments are like Conan's iron thews due to strong genetics, eating my Wheaties, and a lifetime of outdoorsmanship. I didn't spend my life in air-conditioned boxes and then a Californian office cube for years before "discovering" the outdoors. I haven't even broken a bone despite years of rock climbing, spelunking, wading (which is an activity in which you really need to worry about rolling an ankle), white-water kayaking, and of course hiking.
