Sweden has STF. It should be open for the winter season until late April. Plenty of winter trails on lantmateriet SE - on the map dots are summer trails, dashes are marked winter trails . Pick one that connects different STF huts. Kungsleden in winter is good and relatively safe.

There is usually a lot of traffic on this trail, meaning you will meet several people groups every day and you don't have to break your own trail in the snow. Abisko to Nikkaluokta, or Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta are popular winter sections.

However it can get to -30C if you are unlucky. Also whiteout can happen unexpectedly if fresh snow gets blown up into the air.

No signal for the northern sections. In the south you might get lucky. If it's your first time and alone I would take an inreach just to be safe.
If you walk the trail only in the footsteps of others you might not need skis or snow shoes. There are some crazy people who go without both.

Power is only at fjellstations. Those are in Abisko, Saltoluokta, Kvikkjokk, Hemavan only.

The northern part is actually more well traveled and has better infrastructure. Just no cellphone reception.
I never did the whole thing in winter but there are a lot of frozen lakes to cross on the winter trail you have to navigate those by hand because there are no trail markers on the lake obviously.

There is good public transport in winter to Kvikkjokk and Abisko.
Not sure about Saltoluokta-Kebnats, here is usually a flixbus in summer.
Nikkaluokta is prebooked bus or taxi only in the winter.

If I could go I would do a one or two week round tour from Kvikkjokk to Saltoluokta and back again if there is no transport available in Saltoluokta. There are lots of beautiful winter spots to explore next to the trail and around the Sarek national park.

dont do it, visit some winter theme hotel up north and get a guided snowmobile excursion, sleep in a ice hotel, look at the northern light, be the tourist you are its nothing shamefull about it. but dont do what you talk about.

actually I can be your guide for free if you want to go Kvikkjokk - Sarek - Saltoluokta area. Its doable with just shoeshows because of the steady snowmobile and ski traffic on the trails. I need to get out of the city anyways.

Maybe a good idea. I'm here for a reason :) and not on mainstream outdoorsites.
I have decided to do the Kungsleden north to south starting around 20. or 25. February when the huts open until Saltoluokta or Kvikkjokk, I have three weeks of time but might only do ten days or two weeks. If I hadn't seen your thread I might not have thought about it yesterday and today, so thanks I guess. Add me on disc infi#8789 if you have questions or want to make plans. No guarantees though, things might not work out for whatever reason since I don't know you.

Weather maps are showing it as around -2C, will it be snowy or boggy? Any recommendations for an old-growth forest?

Tiveden national park or glaskogen. Should be pretty empty in winter. Avoid during the hiking season.
Expect rain, slush, snow, no sun. Those are tough conditions. You have to go there with a mission or challenge in mind or you won't enjoy the wet.

It's much more enjoyable in the north where it's colder and not so wet.

Bears should be sleeping. I recall someone accidentally woke up a bear and got quite injured maybe even died but that was like 10 years ago.

We don't have elk. I don't think 'kronhjort' cause any problem.
Moose probably cause more car accidents than any attacks on humans, you're lucky to see one. Just don't bother them if you do.

You will get insanely hot when you are just walking, even in -20C conditions. You just need to pack for when you are not moving. Dry change of underlayer and socks, a warm hoodie or a wool shirt that will keep in the warmth, etc
