>>2527299>What is the best shell jacket you can buy all around use money no object ?depends on your needs.
my perspective will be from someone who hikes mostly in the pnw and canada and doesn't stay home when the weather's bad. for me the only rain gear worth considering is non dwr/membrane based systems that can't wet out. i like the following:
- silpoly
- columbia outdry
- gore tex shakedry, frog toggs tied
top of the list being the more durable off trail choices and bottom of the list being the manicured trail top performers.
if i had to choose a single rain jacket with money as no object i would probably get this
https://timmermade.com/product/silpoly-rain-pullover-jacket/because it performs very well, has a near infinite lifespan, and its strong enough for off trail abuse long term.
and if i lived somewhere with less rain or only showers, i would consider something more mainstream like a dead bird jacket or an OR helium or something.
because
>Is there any point in getting a lighter shell that isn’t goretex prob that’s lighter and can be packed more easily over a harder shell that’s goretex pro ?yeah this makes a big difference if your jacket's only getting packed for just in case reasons. the harder more durable shell will last you far longer if you're bushwhacking off trail. which one is best depends on what you're doing.
