Yeah the southern half of the Massif Central as a whole is probably my favorite area as well. The geography is weird and has nothing in common with the volcanic Auvergne most think of when it comes to the Massif.
There are some really peculiar places out there worth visiting and it's among the least densely populated parts of the country. Deep river canyons and barren limestone plateaux, but also heavily forested rugged mountains, the clash of climate zones between mountains and the Mediterranean zone, and all of that in like a 200km radius
Highly recommend the Pyrenees as well, they're also very varied with a dryer eastern side and a very humid Atlantic side. Some pretty amazing forests there as well. The Alps are more "grand" in terms of sheer size but the Pyrenees are a bit wilder, with less populated valleys and not as riddled with ski resorts (at least when comparing with the French Alps)
>From what I saw Montpellier is similar to Lyon, maybe slightly cheaper? It might be I'm not really up to date I lived in Montpellier almost a decade ago, it is one of the fastest growing city of the country in terms of population and general attractiveness, and there's a ton of university so finding a flat can be a bit of a scramble. For most people that is
About Marseille, I've actually never been myself. Excluding the airport once I guess
So I can't tell you anything first hand about it but yes it has a reputation kek
Both good and bad, idk I see it as an odd city but that deserves credit for a few things. I would absolutely visit it and I don't see any reason for you not to yeah.
I wouldn't live there but it's not really because it's Marseille it's just that I'd rather not live in a city of 1 million people in the first place
