You didn't need the harness. We used to make harnesses out of tubular nylon webbing. There might even be instructions on the internet on how to wrap and tie it. Take care with the water knot, if you fuck this up I'm not even throwing you in a ditch you can rot where you land.

Having skills is in and of it's self valuable.
It's just fun for one, and it's a road into climbing.
Secondly it's a prepper skill, just knowing how to get down from high places can be useful. Even if its just theory.
Lastly it just sounds fun and I was able to put together a kit for 50 bucks.

Wear and tear on ropes. If I run a rope over a surface like a rock ledge or a wood hand rail do I need to buy anything under it to protect it?

Secondly I have seen people demonstrating using a break hand in the back. I'll use a glove but how harsh is that rope going to pass through my hand with a single girth hitch?

Really I am doing this to learn by doing. These are the only two things I have no clue about and can't test for before I go off the edge. Tips and tricks are always nice though.

yeah over rocks and sharp areas having a wrap for the rope is gonna be a good idea and also gonna extend your rope life. get good gloves like the ones in the pic (petzl makes good climbing gear) make sure everything that gonna hold weight is rated for way more than you will ever use it for. yes the breaking hand usually will be at the back when rappelling. learn what a prussik and VT prussik knot's are and how to tie them. pulleys are gonna be used later as you get more knowledge and applied skill. fingerless gloves are a big no no always full finger (ropes will burn you so fast you cannot imagine) let me know if you have any other questions.

I am sticking to low heights just about 5 6 m for now. I plan on doing the real learning after I get the level one hands on type stuff. I learn best hands on so as you point out I have a long way to go but I won't do it if I don't ever start and try.

i wish i could teach you anon. rappelling is hella fun but i will say this. on low height drops its fine to do solo stuff bigger stuff you need a buddy. learn the difference between static and dynamic rope along with wet ropes. depends on what you do and where that will define what rope type you need.
>REI is a good source to just browse and get a rough idea.
>get a real harness trust me. you can get away with using tubular nylon for a bit but once you get a harness it feels so much better
>get a petzl william ball lock auto carabiner. it will make life easier
>avoid steel stuff unless its for anchors.
>avoid stuff that screws shut if you need to unscrew it on the rope or carry a multi-tool
>the pliers are a godsend.

Is this the Retarded Climbing Ideas General? Cause I have a retarded question. I'm a turbo poorfag who often hikes on steep forested slopes. I'd like to add some protection in case I slip and eat shit. So I was looking at climbing gear and most of it, including the nice dynamic ropes, is too pricey for me. But I noticed you can get static stuff much cheaper. So my question is, is there a way you can add something like, I dunno, maybe a rubber inner tube, something springy, to soften the impact on the static rope? Kind of like a bungee jump cord? Or maybe a DIY "screamer" energy absorber by sewing webbing together? Keep in mind I'm only going to treat this like an ejection seat: a risky second chance that could completely fail. I will NOT be using it to actually climb the slope or repel.

we use simple static rope setups all the time at any angle up to 45 degrees in the fire service, including for hauling patients in stretchers. You can't really soften the impact but you also probably won't need to. Dynamic rope is a 10-40% stretch when it's shock loaded (big fall) because the load adds up really fast. Falling on a static rope as long as there isn't much slack is super good enough
