Seconding the book suggestions, it helps to have something to do. I also bring a gun, but that's mostly for fun plinking innawoods, I don't expect to ever have to use it on anything out there. Semi-related story:
>Be teenager, first time camping in backcountry
>Alone
>No tent, just a hammock with my pack strung under it and a shotgun lying against the tree
>Wake up to loud noises
>STOMP STOMP *rustle* STOMP SMASH
>Some big motherfucker stepping through the under brush
>Creeped out, probably just a deer or something
>Go back to sleep, happens again, much closer
>Sounds like it's right next to me
>Leap out of hammock, grab gun, turn on flashlight
>Two giant eyes reflected back at me a couple dozen yards away
>Rack slide
>"GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE, FUCK OFF, GO!"
>Gallops off
Guessing it was an elk or a really big deer buck. Scared the hell outta me, but at least I got to feel badass screaming at the top of my lungs at an unknown animal at least twice my size in the middle of the night.
Anyway OP, I always camp alone since then. You'll be fine. If you want, bring bear spray or a large-bore handgun or even a long gun if you want to deal with all that weight, but you probably won't even need that. Most animals are pussies, even black bears, and tend to run off if you act all big and loud at them.
Probably won't help against the aliens though.
