I need some help throwing crankbaits on a bait caster, I either birds nest every time or have to tighten it down so much I can't get any distance. I'm using the following:
Lew's Classic Pro Speed Spool SLP (Cheap $60 reel)
Dobyn's Fury 7' Crankbait Rod
12Lb Yo Zuri Top Knot
3/8oz 2 3/4in Crankbait

I have experience throwing Texas rigs on a nicer Daiwa casting reel and stiffer extra fast rod and rarely have an issue. Should I be throwing this bait on a spinning reel? Did I maybe overspool it? Am I just casting wrong with the softer rod?

Those baits should be heavy enough even for a cheap memecast reel. Like other anon said, keep dicking around with the brakes, also try to cast flat. I may not be KvD, but I know my baitcasters don’t like when I lob baits high into the air.

I bought my first expensive baitcaster 20 years ago. Relatively they were even more expensive back then. Had the exact same problem. Never touched one again. I don't think it is detrimental to fishing but I look like the oldest man on earth using a zebco 33. It is nice people think I'm new to fishing

You shouldn’t really have to chuck the lure, use the leverage of the handle and side cast as flat as you can from the hip if you aren’t. Your spool may be overfilled or the line isn’t on very tight. Start with your tension knob on the looser side and your brakes at 50%. Back everything down until you find a comfortable middle ground

One and the same. "Dumped out of a truck" is one of my catchphrases, very recognizable. Farm-raised fish are actually a good thing; otherwise, every last fish would have been stripped out of every single stream by now. I'm just mad I can never experience the long-gone, pre-colonization days when a fisherman could catch 100+ native freshwater fish in a single day using primitive tackle.

Yes, in virtually unpopulated pristine wilderness areas (your highlighted area corresponds exactly to the lowest-population portions of Canada/Alaska) with numerous waterway linkages to vast natural lakes, seas, bays, and the ocean, you can catch fish like hunter-gatherers once did (or for that matter, people one or two hundred years ago).

Way back in the day, even remote mountain streams far from any lake, ocean, or sea would have bounties of fish to offer.

Last night sculpin hunt was a bust. I saw one a couple weeks agow but I didn't have any good bait on me at the time. Last night I only saw fry of brook trout, white sucker, and eastern black nose dace as well as adult tessellated darter, redfin pickerel, and red spotted newt. The newt was the only one interested in my bait.

This is a discussion about "fishing as sport," here ITT, not "fishing as profession." I'm not going to filet, de-bone, cook, and eat a dozen four- to six-inch brook trout. Secondarily, I can't be bothered; but primarily I want them to survive so that they can make more brook trout for me to catch, or even be caught by me again next week.

I think bassbros are some of the most contemptible and pitiable people on Earth (warning: /out/ bassbros probably already think you're me, KEK), but not because they practice catch and release. It's because they catch and release badly: banging the fish around on the bottoms of their boats, handling them extensively to obtain pics for Fishbrain and Reddit, chucking them back in like Frisbees, etc. The survival rate of bassbro-caught bass is quite low. I unhook and release fish quickly and with minimal handling, preferably never entirely leaving the water.

AFAIK brook trout in small streams normally suffer from overpopulation and lack of food rather than not enough reproduction. At least where I live, there is a special larger big limit specially for small brook trout to encourage keeping them since it increases the average size of them.

As a trophy bass fisherman, idk why you guys are losing your shit over a kid getting praise for catching and releasing a ~6-7 pound bass. The simple fact it got views is because he's a kid first and foremost, not because he's black. There's a plethora of videos of kids of all races catching big fish and going viral, hell not even just catching fish, doing complicated techniques even adult fisherman can't do, like that white ~6 year old kid who was doing 100 feet double haul fly casts a couple months back.

Only crap that gets me mad is the thots on social media. As long as you're a 6/10 and above and catching dinks, you'll go viral. Even the most bimboed up middle-aged woman with the most obvious, balloon size boob job goes ultra viral.

I'd use Co-Poly instead of braid if this is the case. I don't know if they sell it in the UK or not.
It's nylon mono coated in fluoro so it has a little stretch and give like mono while sinking a little better and being more invisible like fluoro.
I've had plenty of luck using Yo Zuri Hybrid which is pretty cheap.

i think he's actually authentic, I do similar shit just in crown land and parks throughout ontario/quebec and can't deny the fact that when i reach an place with beautiful landscape or hook on a real fighter i get the serotonin/adrenaline rush similar to him. Fuck powerbait. Literally scented plastic paste. Cast marabou crappie jigs, small floating minnow style crankbaits, or inline spinners. Can also bobber fish with worms or fly fishing nymphs. Focus on getting the bait as close to the bottom as possible without snagging, if you aren't getting caught on the bottom once in awhile you aren't fishing deep enough. Look for deep holes, or areas where the current is broken up by large rocks or other structure.

That said, fishing in put-and-take heavily pressured trout fisheries is normally a waste of time outside of the month or so after they are stocked. They all get caught.

Depends on a lot of factors, such as the water temperature, actual size of the pond, how recently they were stocked, etc.

My experience with stocked trout cooped up in small pools and ponds is that you often have to try everything and the kitchen sink to get them to bite, and will be lucky if they actually do. I've fished pools so clear that I could watch every single trout and what it was doing. What they typically do is ignore (or turn to watch go by) every dry fly, wet fly, streamer, nymph, caddis, spinner, spoon, salmon egg, Trout Magnet, grub, worm, etc. Doesn't matter how thin the leader, whether or not a sinker and/or bobber are used, etc.

Whereas I can dip the tiniest Trout Magnet or a very tiny fly into a seam that I know contains a brookie, twitch it once, and then I have a brookie on the line. Brookies make sense: know where to go and where they'll likely be, avoid spooking them, ease a fly or plastic grub or something into their cone of vision, twitch, catch.

Best I can tell you with farm trout trapped in a barrel is to try everything. Probably live nightcrawlers would be best. My best theory is that farm trout mostly choose to starve while waiting around for trout chow. I've considered buying some trout chow and tying that on, but that hardly seems sporting.

Picrel, two of four stocked trout I caught out of a crystal-clear pool with my buddy last fall. We split them up. It took four hours to catch them using every conceivable technique, lure, and bait, and I don't remember which ones they randomly bit on because it all ran together after a while.

The hard part about getting a natural trout is finding and hiking to their location, also the funnest part IMO. But stocked trout can be finicky.

I typically just bring 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 ounce spinners, both panther martins and kastmasters, in just gold and silver. 9 times out of 10 they'll bite that. Trout magnet is my last resort.

if you buy Yo-Zuri Hybrid just keep in mind that the diameter is thicker than mono per the rating. 6lb Hybrid is almost as thick as 10lb mono, and 4lb Hybrid is almost as thick as 8lb mono. Supposedly it breaks about 2lbs over the rating though, it's definitely not weak. it's not as limp as something like Trilene XL mono, but it's not bad at all. I still like Trilene XL overall, I've pulled some really bad snags that bent hooks with only 6lb and 8lb line, the stretch in that shit makes it break way above it's rating, and stretch isn't as big of a deal when fishing crankbaits or most hardbaits in general.

I'm primarily a fly fisherman of backcountry streams, and I do feel that the challenge of finding and not spooking wild trout is the more prestigious and interesting challenge. You do also need to know proper hook sizes, rigging, type and size of flies/lures/bait, and how to impart action to flies/lures. Once you do know these things, it's EZ PZ Nipponeesy.

It's true though that stocked trout aren't easy to catch; neither are stocked bass, although that's because they're so intensely pressured and we'll educated.

Stocked fish are usually placed where grandma on a mobility scooter can roll up and catch them. Jobless or retired people fishing then out all week while you work adds a whole extra layer of challenge.

I exclusively use Antares's, Calcutta Conquests, and Metaniums. I recently picked up a Tatula 300 for my big, big swimbait rod and a tatula 200 for my 1-4 ounce topwater swimbait rod, they're kick ass reels man. For how inexpensive they are, they feel like tanks and are butter smooth. Only complaint (ONLY ONE) is that the drag star is obviously plastic, but that's a minor thing. Casts like a dream as well.

Cool thing about Tatula's is that their advertised spool size is actually much bigger to the comparable Shimano. Tatula 100 = Shimano ~180 spool, 200 = ~250-280 spool, 300 = ~350-380 spool. They hold a lot more line than the Curado equivalents, and that's cool. T-wing system actually works really well.

I own both a tatula and a curado. They’re both phenomenal reels and it’s hard to pick one over the other. My only gripe about the tatula is the brake dial placement. I’ve accidentally turned my brakes off palming the reel, ending up in a few bad tangles. I still absolutely love it though and just need to be mindful with each cast

Went fishing fishing today and Took a walk around the edge of the lake. Grabbed a few fishing lures when I found this one I got a little excited cause it looked cool sadly it was rusted but the previous owner was so stupid he jammed the frog's hooks through the frog's body poking them out the top Essentially making it unusable and probably why it was stuck in a tree branch.

honestly I hate those frogs anyways. the hooks are too thick and it being a stinger(2 hooks) is unnecessary. one strong light wire single hook is much better. you can miss a lot of strikes with thost thick stock hooks. you really have to be quick, the fish has to engulf it, and your rod has to be stiff as fuck. I modify all of my frogs and it's so much better.

I will say that in some parts of Atlantic Canada, you can license-free fish certain saltwater species year-round (squid & mackerel) and some for certain scheduled days (cod, halibut, other big groundfish). you should really look into options regarding this sort of exception, I'd guess that states that have historical maritime culture (Maine, Mass, NY, etc) would have freer access to saltwater fishing like in Atlantic Canada

You don't ice fish, though, do you? You're pretty prolific with your namefagging and photos but I don't recall seeing any of you ice fishing. Neither do I, we don't get ice like that in southern Appalachia, and I'm not going to travel hundreds of miles to sit on a bucket in a shack.

A deeply frozen bucket will be a lot more brittle, that might be a factor.

There are no "best telescopic standard rods," they all suck sadly. Skid has shown you the best, which are all cheap crap. Multi-piece ultralight rods in a folded rod sock are the way to go there.

Had a lot of fun fishing last year and want to take it more seriously when the ice melts so thinking of grabbing a new rod. Found a nice deal ($100 off) a “Daiwa Rebellion” but it’s only “regular” action which seems to be moderate-fast by Daiwa standards. Question is, what is a moderate fast to be preferred over a fast action? Was talking to my old neighbour (ex tournament fisherman, retired and goes around the world fishing cool locations) and he told me to get a 7 foot medium fast and I can do almost anything. Moderate or moderate-fast rods are actually better "do it all" rods. The only downside is that you don't have as good of hook setting potential(unless the rod is a heavier action than the lure you're using to make up for it.) The benefit of a slower action like this is that the bend of the rod "absorbs" the movement of the fish when it fights better, resulting in less chance of the fish getting loose by throwing the lure. it's really good for hardbaits and treble hook baits, but anything with a light wire single hook can still be set without problem. once again, it also depends on the rod "power" and not just action. lastly, you can get away with throwing lures on the lighter end of the rod's range more effectively, since the rod will bend and load up more. I don't know anything about that specific rod, but I mainly use moderate/moderate-fast rods for everything. there are a few good options for around $100 even if you don't buy that rod. rod selection matter more with what weight lures you plan to throw than the fish you're targeting. a medium-light rod is best for your scenario.

If you had/want to buy only one rod that will work great for all the fish you listed, I suggest the TFO PRO S 663-1 or PRO S 703-1. It can easily launch 1/8oz lures for small fish, and 1/4-3/8oz lures for larger fish no problem. It's the best "do it all" rod I've found for freshwater. I run 8lb trilene xl or 6lb yo-zuri hybrid on mine. it doesn't overpower the smaller fish to the point where you can't feel them, and it has enough backbone to easily land bigger fish too.

I looked at the Rebellion and it's got very weird options. Much more tailored towards experienced people that have a dozen rods laying on their boat for different techniques. I'd pass on it as a first rod, It does have nice components though. The only spinning model I saw with the "R" has a very wide lure rating so I'm not sure what that would be used for or how it would feel. Specs and how it feels in person can be way different too.

I love gear and accessories as much as the next fisherman. For panfishing and fly fishing, I have a vest and a sling pack; for kayak and bank fishing, I have a tackle bag and a tackle backpack; carp and catfish get their own tackle bag; and I have several tackle boxes, but one is now my fishing toolbox and the rest are all tackle storage. I use big stackable bins and plastic drawer stands for everything else.

Oh yeah, and I use an old professional camera bag to hold my microfishing shit.

I often swap tackle around between these setups when needed, but soon enough I suppose I'll get more packs, bags, and crates and they'll all be fully specialized, with yet more sitting empty waiting for when I want a "hybrid" setup to pull some tackle into out of the specialized containers.

You're right, but then again you'd be able to sell an autographed original photograph of Hulk Hogan, Mike Rowe, or Les Stroud, all of whom are fake personalities just as bass fishing is a very artificially-maintained sport, for a lot more than you'd get for an autographed photo of the world's top nuclear physicist, brain surgeon, etc., or even Dick Proenneke for that matter.

Within the sunfish family, some species are referred to as sunfish directly, other species are referred to by some peasant-speak pidgin gibberish (that may or may not make any sense) despite also being sunfish, and still other species of sunfish are called "bass" despite not being true bass, presumably as a marketing gimmick to trick rednecks into fishing for sunfish.

I'd say hybrid most likely. only ever caught green sunfish in that pond though. one of my best catches ever, he was super thick like a fat leather wallet. caught him twice on back to back casts, probably guarding a bed.

I can't tell you spots but I can tell you upu want a 9 foot 6 weight with a moderate fast action. That will get you going on trout, smallmouth, perch, and you can even throw smaller pike flies with a stout leader. He'll, with the right leader and line that 6 weight will do everything; dry flies, nymph rigs, streamers. A floating general purpose taper will do almost everything you need, and if you supplement it with a 6ips poly leader or sinking line, that'll do just about everything. If you want to tie your own leaders get a spool of #20, #15, #10, #8, #6, and #4 mono, otherwise store bought is fine. You will want tippet spools if you're running store bought leaders, though, to extend the life. 4x, 3x, 2x, and 1x will cover most of your bases

you guys think some spoons may work as well? The lake DOES have laketrout and is stocked with splake, i've never had any luck catching them in the 200ft part of the lake they inhabit during the other months, but don't they swim shallower in the winter? They should be cruising at those depths this time of year and can even come right up to shore. Cast at dropoffs along points. Cobble/gravel/rock bottom are probably most productive for laker. Let it sink most of the way to bottom and slow jig on retrieve. Mix up your retrieve and see what works. In late fall I catch them like this.
