>>2532493Just because you saw a Vagrant Holiday video where he trainhopped for a week doesn't mean you'll magically be able to live as a hobo for an entire summer. Of those "large groups of people", do you know how many have been dragged to death by trains, or how many have fallen, or how many were dismembered on the tracks or in between cars, or how many were beaten by bulls? Hitchhiking is marginally safer, but it's still a gamble. There are a lot of nasty people outside of your sheltered neighborhood.
Here's my advice: if you just want to see the country, buy a beater and car camp across the country. You can do it legally and safely on BLM and most forest service land. Gas will cost you, sure, but you'll get many of the same views on the interstate that you would on a train, and without having to hide from bulls or take shelter from extreme weather.
>But my car might break down!If you can't handle dealing with a breakdown, you would never have survived train hopping. And if your trip ends early, Mom and Dad can come pick you up and not your corpse.
And if you just want views of nature along with the feeling of being self-sufficient, why not just learn how to camp?
