I want to watch birds when I go into the mountains, I think I would enjoy that very much.
Nudge me in the right direction for buying some nice binoculars. Would 10x42 be sufficient? Surely there's a sweet spot for magnification/lens and weight.
I'm thinking about spending 200-300 Euro dollars.

I've been an avid bird watcher for decades and never take binoculars into the woods with me...because they're pretty useless in the woods. Much of the time you'll only ever hear them but many birds are very curious and will come check you out...they're usually hard to spot because they're stealth as fuck and too fast for binoculars anyways. Ironically some of the best birding areas are near light density urban areas. Depending on where you live Migratory birds can be coaxed into your yard after a year or two of leaving out feed and you really don't have to go to them.
All that said just get a heavy as fuck pair of high power binoculars, some good regional bird books, and accept you're going to spend more time on the trail (in the woods) figuring out the bird songs than ever seeing anything.

I want to get a small pocket-size monocular and I don't understand why they're so uncommon. It seems like the options are $60 chinesium garbage, or $650 leica bling. Why can I find over 9000 kinds of tactical killing scopes with crosshairs and rangefinders everywhere but barely any monoculars?

8x42 or 10x42 is the "standard" when it comes to somewhat compact binoculars that also perform good in low light. If you want truly compact binoculars, I would recommend Vortex Diamondback HD 8x32. They have a very wide field of view, and are much lighter/smaller than 42s. of course you trade off some low-light performance compared to 42s. It all depends on what you prioritize and how you carry them also. if you keep them around the neck, you notice every couple of ounces. I feel that the 8x32 diamondback hd hit the "overall" sweet spot for everything, but 10x42 are better for really getting in close on something that might be further away.

because monoculars have fallen out of favor. they are inferior to binoculars in terms of comfort/eye strain, and rangefinders have added features but arent meant to be used for extended looking. do yourself a favor and buy some quality compact binoculars like the diamondback hd 8x32. they're pretty small and light. they will fit in a small belt pouch or waist pack.

This would be something to carry while on a bicycle, not extended looking, so it's monocular or nothing for me. Has to be compact, bump resistant, and waterproof. Vortex iz gud then? I never heard of it before but they've got some supposedly waterproof monoculars on the market. Was looking at a vortex solo 8x25 but I'm sketched out by the $70 price tag, nothing that cheap could possibly be good?

you were probably looking at the slightly smaller 8x25, but this will have much better light gathering and it's barely bigger.

you have to use two hands anyways to adjust the focus knob(things at different distances are blurry if you are noob) so why not just get compact binoculars? I'm telling you it's the better option but I guess you'll have to learn the hard way.

Yeah I was looking at the 8x25, 8x36 is pushing my size limits but I'll have to give it some thought. The leica that everyone seems to love is 8x20 though I'm sure the glass is much better

Because a "shitty" monocular that requires focusing (lol?) that can keep in my jersey pocket next to a spare tube is going to do a better job than a pair of super amazing deep space binoculars that can spot a planet surrounding a nearby binary star system that can only be carried around in a range rover

Amusing to me to see this board is just as autistic and incapable of understanding different use cases for gear as every other gear board, I may come back here sometimes to start arguments based on the premise that everyone else's needs are identical to my own and if anyone else's needs appears different it is because they are stupid and a noob

I'm simply explaining to you that it's a two-handed affair either way. most noobs might not even know that you have to constantly focus based on range changes. compact binos are literally the size of two of those monoculars beside eachother, so they still fit in small pouches. I don't think you understand how small some binoculars are. I probably do more "ultralight" shit as you wish you did, and I'm just trying to tell you binoculars are better for a very small penalty.

I know you think you're le epic trole but the whole thing that got me thinking about it is my dad actually is blind in one eye and I was playing around with some of his myraid optical products (including monoculars) and the thought occurred to me that it might be nice to have such a thing when I'm out for a ride and I see a cool bird or something, since binoculars are obviously out of the question.

The thing is none of it is particularly waterproof or rugged because it's for walking around with a grandpa hat and a cane and he's got a ginormous fanny pack, so whatever he's got doesn't really work for me. But I was impressed by how non-shitty his athlons are for how cheap they were, and was disappointed to see they don't make anything like this.

I keep a Vortex solo in my emergency kit. It's good for quick viewing and very light. Just don't expect to be looking thru it for longer than 5-10 min before your eyeball gets tired. Zeiss also makes some ultra compact ones for around 400 if you want something better but still less than Leica's.
