I love fir and spruce trees as much as anyone else, but they aren't too different no matter where you go. And besides, I camped out in a tent on-site during the build process of my house more than enough --by now it's lost most of its appeal.
as for going /out/:
lake for swimming/kayaking: 3 miles away
river for swimming/fishing: .5 mile away
fuck-off-long-hiking-trails: quite literally walk out my door and there I am.
I think a lot of people go /out/ (camping/hiking/whatever) for a change of scenery. for me that would be a weekend in Portland -- which, no thank you.
