How do you hike? Do you go through a planning phase? Do you bring navigation?

For me, I just go to the woods and walk until I'm tired and then I turn around. I enjoy getting lost but I never have trouble using the lay of the land to get to civilization. I use trails to get into the forest, but I go off trail as soon as I'm immersed in the wilderness.

My mom and cousin autistically plan their routes with water sources and shelter spots when they go on random trails. I just go walk around until I'm tired and set up camp wherever I am at the time.

I made a reservation and went all the way to Lilley Cornett woods and I forgot my blood pressure medication back at the car when I was hiking with the guide (you have to have a guide there) so I gave up. Gonna go back. The part around High Knob near the VA/KY border was super gorgeous.

I try to plan multiple routes and spots on my phone so I can have lots of options in the area and download maps where possible.

Depends. If we're talking about a short hike in a familiar area I do same as you, just pack a bottle of water and head out and walk and then go home. If I'm going somewhere unfamiliar or doing something more challenging, like a hike in the Adirondacks, I'll plan it out, look at the map, bring supplies, etc.

I just hike in a loop around Painstville Lake. Alternatively, I follow some trails along the ridge of my holler. I usually bring some Copenhagen and a bottle of Ale8 in case I get thirsty.

Nearby dayhike, zero worries no plans.
Anywhere remote, I've spent an hour scouting with caltopo and figuring out what areas look cool, then made a map and printed it. I don't plan hikes too carefully, but I pick out several routes s that look interesting and play it by ear when I arrive.
National park tier wilderness, there's a trip plan filed with senpai even if I'm not doing exact day by day itineraries.

Generally i look at the government website here in sweden and find a national park i want to go to, try finding out which time of the year is most popular and try to avoid the biggest crowds, i download the area maps as PDF and spare paper copy which i laminate, i check to see if there are fixed shelters ( Generally every park have some shelters called vindskydd = Wind shelter which is a wooden structure mainly to keep you out of the wind/rain) Then i check the terrain to see if i go hammock or tent and pack accordingly, i have a fucked up achilles tendon from the army so i try to make the most of the time spent walking to get some distance in between short breaks.
