What are my options for internet access in a remote location with no mobile network coverage?

I'd rather not get Starlink due to piracy and censoring issues.

you can look at hughes net but its highly location dependent if you have a cottage in one place it can be ok but if you're hiking around in multiple locations it's no better than cell coverage.

well that sucks because its your only option that is realistically useful for anything other than a SOS call or text message. Other shit is about 10k /sec on a good day.

Hughs/vilesat are not options. Before Starlink we had vilesat, and it was $160 a month with a 100gb cap, unusable during peak hours, and otherwise down roughly 50% of the time. Oh, and ping times were around 600ms in best case.

Cellular(which op nixed) was marginally better, still massively overpriced, throttled, and with silly caps on bandwidth.

Don’t let them fool you with the elonmanbad fud - Starlink is a game changer for anyone rural.

Correct. It even mogs the line of site WISP I had before, and I really like those guys. Sadly, they couldn't match the speed and price of big daddy musk.

Hughes isn't terrible, but given the choice between it and starlink, i'd go starlink.
I'm sticking with hughes till I get sick of lugging the equipment/dish around, or taking ~20mins to get set up/aligned and online. It's paid for and only costs are service costs (<$100/mo for more data than I use on vsat). Commercial plan lets me do my own installs and change beams, residential plan locks your account to a specific beam. Switching to starlink would be a little more monthly with the additional hardware buy-in.
