Lures are fine, but they can quickly get expensive when you keep snagging on logs, rocks, etc, and break your line. A pack of long shank hooks(vary your size depending of species or course), some split-shot lead weights, a few bobbers and some good old fashioned worms will guaranteed get you some fish. Power bait can also work well, though personally I've had sub par success with it. If you do get lures, Dick Nites are classics and you can usually find them on sale or cheap. OH, and get some swivel snaps. The go between your main line and your leader line(the line piece you attach to the hook or lure). It makes changing tackle quicker, and if you put your weight above it on the line you won't be losing a bunch of split shots. Go forth, be patient, be persistent, and be friendly and nice to fisherman you see. You'll be surprised just how friendly and willing to teach fishermen are when you look them in the eye, treat them with respect, and you aren't littering or getting loaded.
