That looks like a nissian x-trail. If it is they're a very capable vehicle. I drive a 2014 nissian D40 navara. It has taken me everywhere in Australia. To the most northern point up cape york, across the deserts and to the most southern point on the mainland. A lot of people shit on them but the amount of times I've fucked up and just dumped the clutch or had to do extremely aggressive hill starts red lining it from 2nd low I really should have broke something by now, but nothing has snapped. Very good vehicles and lots of fun to explore in.

Nice wheels OP. What sort of adventures do you have in mind for it?
Mine arrived last year with just enough time for a day trip before getting snowed in. Real excited to do some remote camping and exploring once things thaw out and dry off.

I just bought a chebby suburban, needs work but once I fix a missfire and the 4x4 I'm going to take it on some extended forest service road trips. I also have an FJ cruiser and a 94 F-150 that I daily drive, but the Toyota needs a lot of work and wasn't pleasant to drive anywhere but a trail even before I did a bunch of modifications to it. I'll fix some of it this summer.

I have a 2003 Tahoe Z71 for towing my boat, hauling my kayak, and getting to some secret rock climbing spots. Most good kayak launches and climbing spots are down trails that don't really need 4x4, but the ground clearance comes in handy vs my shitbox daily

Tbh terrible decision to buy anything blacked out for offroading. I have a blacked out, tinted windows etc wagon that looked cool on the lot which is the bane of my life to keep clean. Takes twice as long and need s twice as frequent cleaning as other vehicles. Plus shows the scratches worse. Funnily enough my work ute is black as well and it has the same problem. It also gets hotter when its parked so makes for a generally unpleasant vehicle to get into on a summers day. Other than that it looks a nice truck

Ironically the suburban gets better gas milage than the FJ, but also drives better everywhere but the worst trail and is cozy to sleep in the back. Plus it was cheap as frig because the owner thought the transmission was gone but it was just a blown fuse to the TCM.

Honestly my 3rd gen Ram 2500 with the manual trans, a locker in the rear, and 33s has surprised the hell out of me. Was just out on some tight forest service roads with a ton of elevation change. 8-10inches of powder on them, and I was the first one to drive through it. Truck did great. Only got stuck twice. Once I droppped a rear tire off the edge, and airing down real low +4low walked it right back up onto the road.

he said rear locker, the only time you need a rear locker is when you lift a rear wheel, a lot of people get in the habit of just using the locker and ignoring wheel lifts, making them worse drivers in the long run, double lockers will get any newb anywhere

The lower shock mount is also the u bolt plate connecting it to the leaf springs. Im going to have to blast the shit out of it to turn the shock bolt its so rusted on. My theory is everything's settled and introducing a newer and stiff part would give me problems with other components down the line. I've heard of leaf springs snapping out of their mounts if their rusted. Mine aren't rusted, though I think about the shackles. Id rather not replace those. All in all I think itd be counter intuitive to put high performance shocks on an old suspension system.

you don't have to get "high performance" shocks. something like bilstein 4600 are "stock replacement" and come on things like Toyota TRD packages for example. if you have any kind of lift, even small, bilstein 5100s have different models for whatever lift you have. if your leaf springs aren't sagging, no reason to replace them unless you're doing a lift. shock mount is always the first thing to rust, you can have rust all over those and not anywhere else, that's normal.

This is an interesting point. I’m not sure I’m getting myself into too many circumstances where I’ve got one rear lifted off the road surface, outside of the aforementioned dropping a rear tire off the side of the road when it muddy or snowy.

I’ll try to be cognizant of your point going forward though. I’m not going /out/ to improve my driving skills, but if the improvement leads to less getting stuck and wasting time in the truck I’ll take it.

I did diy a lift kit by buying volvo coilsprings and making riser brackets for the shocks, but I ended up making it be a street car again
I think the volvo coils lifted it up about 2 or 3 inches in the back, never lifted the front, just put space saver tires on the front to make the rolling resistance as low as possible
