Thoreau's spot is actually pretty good if you take away everything built since (the highway, the outer parts of Concord). Absolute isolation sounds good in theory (especially when you're young) but, in reality, a remote spot ~2-3 miles from a small, educated town is close to ideal. I'd probably just push it out a bit further. Maybe ~5 miles.

Is the eastern US still that good? The only way I could think of getting away with what Thoreau did would be in unincorporated land out west.

id do it right here in saskatchewan
theres lots of farm work. lots of ok roads and power poles
and theres ten acre farm yards all over
id buy a abondoned yard, around 30k
rent a backhoe and put in a septic lagoon and a dugout for non potable water
buy a used skid shack and put it out there
get a utility pole with a 220 outlet on it
have a little woodstove and a propane tank for backup
bing, bang, boom

It's already built. I bought 20 acres a mile deep in the woods behind county land. River flows along the south property line. Lived there for six months, but working somewhere else for the winter. Trying to find a job near the cabin to be there permanently.
