I've been really enjoying ice skating at the rink and I want to get my own so I stop spending money on rentals. While price isn't really an issue, I'm assuming I don't need the elite level skates ($900+). Can anyone recommend a good pair to get?

What do you even mean? If price wasn't actually a problem you'd buy the $2000 Circumcisor3001. Spend $200 to $300 on a comfortable pair.

I’d say check sideline swap for an old pair of hockey skates and go a size down from your normal shoe size. Also definitely try a different board next time.

Forgot to actually give you skate recommendations. I’d say a pair of Reebok pumps or any of those skates with the built in pumps are nice for beginners since you can get a bit more ankle support. If not ccm tacks are a classic and cheap alternative.

CCM Tacks. Buy a decent new pair and have the shop bake them to your feet. World of difference.
Also, wear a helmet and gloves.

There are like 7 different "AS-X" versions of CCM tacks and I don't know the difference other than the price. Which ones do I get for casual skating?

Don't just "buy Tacks". Each skate that the manufacturers make fit differently then each other.

For example, I have a narrow heel, so I can wear Bauer Vapors, but not Supremes.

You have to go and try them on to find ones that fit the best.

Both ice skates and rollerblades do qualify for /out/ because you can ice skate on frozen lakes, and you can take off-road rollerblades on easy trails, generally wherever horses and/or bicycles are allowed. There's crossover with sports but sometimes crossover is all right. It's not like there are a ton of skaters here to flood the board with a lot of posts, unlike gun talk which would take over quick.

Picrel, it's me suffering through winter rollerblading in a rink. As soon as it's warm I'll be hitting asphalt and trails.
