I recently inherited my childhood shotgun my dad bought me before he passed, and I used to slap Jack rabbits, but I don't hunt small game anymore and want to get back into it.
Mossberg 835, 28 inch barrel, full choke. Live 23 miles from the frank church wilderness of no return area, 60 from the selway.

Aren’t all shotguns effectively the same so long as you have the right choke and shot size? Sure, a beretta semi-auto is a more precise firearm, but a cheap pump action will kill small game just as well.

I've been wondering something similar, anon. I've been looking toward just simple break barrel (single shot), and even double barrel (SxS or OU) for the aesthetic of it. I'd be using mine for grouse as well.

ok anon, since everyone is just responding with random shit: 2 3/4 inch shells with size 6 shot. 5 or 4 is good but no bigger than that. I don’t like how smaller pellets like pepper up the meat so much. Good luck fren.

2 3/4in 5 or 4shot would be a good match I think. I'd suggest maybe a looser choke than a full something like a modified if its threaded for chokes.

I do lots of snow shoe hare hunting and have used various weapons loads etc etc, with a shot gun use high brass 4 or 5 shot. 2 3/4 length.

Alot of people use normal game or target load, but ive found the lighter loads lead to more shot in the meat.

A 1 1/4oz shot charge combined with the heavier 4 or 5 shot helps the pellets have a lot more energy and therefore pass through the hide and meat and not as much shot to dig out, bite down on, etc etc.

I noticed a huge difference when i made the switch. I actually started enjoying eating hares again. Of course 22lr works good too, but shotgun is more versatile

Number 5-7 would be ideal for rabbits. Full choke kinda tight but it can work just don't blast them close like inside 10 yds.

Thank you guys.

Lgs clerk told me to use steel shot 3.5 in magnums. He didn't understand why I told him it was a fire hazard. Turned to google and youtube, and its people trying to sell me products. Turned to /k/, thinking they had any knowledge of firearms, realized its just a containment board. Again I appreciate the responses.

I'd rather use my mossberg 835. And not all shotguns are the same. Some barrels can't handle slugs, some receivers can't handle magnum ammo. And some are are made in turkey and should have never been imported.

I am partial to sxs because it looks better, imo, and leading your shots is quicker.
Also sxs coach gun absolutely fucks aesthetically.
