Anyone have experience with the Rainbow family? I was /out/ing about in the woos when I happened across them. They let me stay with them the night and cooked me two great meals. I really appreciated it, and they told me about a regional gathering. I'm kind of torn as to whether or not to go. Does anyone know of any other groups like them in the U.S. with a less Hippy vibe?

The summer of 2011 I was living in Portland, OR. That same summer the national rainbow gathering was in washington, just two hours north, so some friends and I drove out.
We got there two days before the 4th of july, so right around the peak of the event. This was not camping; 25,000 people all sharing a wooded space of barely 5-6 square miles is like a city in the woods. There were so many people that whatever area you camped/hung outr in started to feel like 'your neighborhood' because you got familiar with the random but constant faces you'd see on the trail.
After a full 24 hours there my friends who I came with decided we'd had enough. We'd stay one more day, drop some acid and then leave the day after that.
There were some amicable stuff going on. The trash controll was impressive, and the pit toilet maintenance was good too, for an event with hundreds of people shitting every day.
In the end though, it seemed like it was just a microcosm of the greater world, as opposed to the alternative it sold it's self as. The economy was based mostly on drug bartering rather than paper money, and systems of privilege and hierarchy were present and accounted for. Mostly people were just kindof surviving in this big clusterfuck, although I guess that's saying something given how much credit I'd like to (not) give to a bunch of fucking hippies.

i actually love rainbow kids, i just hate pretentious traveler kids that deal, drainbows that talk about manifesting shit, and the random leech motherfuckers that seem to be associated. housed up a few last winter, Fat Kid camp, and that group was awesome as fuck. we were all crashing at the same house, i ended up renting a room, they ended up moving to a quiet place on the rez to take care of their newlyborn son.

i live in montana and nationals was here and that was a lot of mixed reactions:

the nearby town of Jackson, MT was gutted of foodbank food, and all the grocery stores were fucked during the gathering. think of a town of 5,000ish blowing up to 50,000ish, and everyone carpooling in and taking everything to camps in the outskirts of town. i don't think the place recovered. cleanup was a hassle, a lot of rainbow kids got the shit kicked out of them in butte for just being stuck there. drugs were good, beautiful ladies, too many puppies, house a few up and you get a meal cooked for you, free drugs, or all your shit stolen or broken.

There are people behind them first and foremost, and who they are defines how it's going to be. The biggest events are usually good, but small ones can range between shit and awesome, depending on the area/people/time of the year.

here, I can attest that fat kids are bretty gud people. they stayed at our house in portland and also when we (room mates and I) all were living in redding.

after that years nationals though, a bunch of real shitlords crashed in our backyard on their way out of the area. got drunk on 4loko and crowded the internet the whole weekend. I tried to be away from the house as much as possible.
for the most part i'll take oogles by the tracks to rainbow hippies in the park any day of the week

From what I noticed, there seem to be 2 types of people from the camp of 30 that I was at. One, the hardcore Hippy, which I didn't like very much, and two, the traveler who was just along for the party, but was willing to work hard to make it happen. I liked the second type a lot.

It seems cool, like a big party, but I just don't like what a bunch of hypocrites they are. They act like it's an alternative lifestyle, but then, in the end, they get all of their food, clothes, and medicine from society.

The manifesting shit got on my nerves, too. There was a big storm coming, and I was like "Guys, we need water for breakfast tomorrow, let's go get it".
They all said "Dude, let's not manifest it."
"Come on guys, this isn't manifesting shit, this is dealing with reality."

I went to the national gathering when it was in the western U.P. over a decade ago. I went there with about 15 other "locals". The organization was impressive on one level. Food was provided for people for free, and since there were like 15,00o people there thats not an easy task. Everyone at that gathering was camped along an old logging trail which led down to a stream. WHen you first walked to the beginning of the trail from the mess of a parking situation you saw most of the riff raff (bikers, punks, harder druggies ect.) and they acted as a sort of buffer zone from the state cops who were trying to do their best to break it up. After you got past that area the more traditional hippies and organizations who had camps with kitchens. At the stream there were nakked people swimming (there were nakked people everywhere) and on the other side a bunch of people got arrested cause the cops said there were archeological sites there (as a local i knew it was just an old garbage dump). They called that side of the stream the "occupied west bank". When you heard "6 up" it was a sigh that cops were on their way and to watch the drugs or nudity, which was actually an extremely effective way to operate. The state police had intermittent choppers buzzing the area so low you could look up and see their faces out of the side of the chopper, but the woods in the U.P. are so thick that they couldn't land anywhere. THey are very generous and nice people for the most part. The biker/homeless group which shows up is a bit seedy though.

I don't know, man. Like I said in my last post, the 2 days that I stayed with the holding camp, I had the opposite impression: Hippies suck and vegabonds rule. The hippies did nothing but sit around and try to manifest food all day, while the other guys actually did nothing but work and put together a working society. Of course, it was very small with one small kitchen, but I don't know, man.

I had a friend who travelled with the Rainbow Tribe for about a year. He got used and abused. There is a hierarchy and you will be taken advantage of if you spend any considerable amount of time with them. Goes to show that society sucks no matter who's in charge.

Googling might help. Just finding one person from it and asking will be a big help of course. I'm not sure how helpful this site will be, but if you find the site for your area you may also be able to contact them through the site and ask.

Yeah. I was out in my local Notional Forest, going along a trail that I had never seen before. There was a big sinkhole right off of the trail, so I thought that I would go check it out. As I'm climbing down, this dog comes charging down behind me, scaring the shit out of me. It seemed vagrant, so I thought that it would be my new trail buddy. Next thing I know, about 5 dudes come out of the woodwork and start acting all friendly. "Hey, try the rope swing","Hey, you out here alone?". This was off putting for 2 reasons:
1). I was way out in the woods, and
2). Ocala National Forest is notorious for meth heads.

I was a bit wary, but they seemed really nice, and I took a chance, and went back to their camp. It was cool, and like I've said earlier, most of them were cultish, lazy, megalomaniacs/codependent types, but about 5% were really cool guys.

Yeah I've been to one rainbow gathering. It was a little bit fucked up and you see some messed up people there. Homeless people who are there just to have a place to stay and something to eat. Intense fuck up druggies and massive hippies. Half the people there were all naked and it became a normal thing around there. Pretty odd place but it was pretty chill because the people there seem to know how to party. Every night there was a huge ass sick fire and people would dance around it and sing, play instruments and there were some hot ass naked chicks also. I ended up getting laid there also. There is litterally no system to control any illegal activity so thats pretty good, but also it can be dangerous (like most travelling intails). They have workshops there where they just do activities and shit, and one of the workshots was basically one where you smoke dope and feel the "energy" of it. xD They are a very spiritual group. Positive. Fucked up. If you can get past all the fucked up people and hippies you can meet some pretty interesting people.

Yeah, I really want to meet some people that are living that kind of lifestyle. I have a lot of trouble finding people who are operating on the same wavelength as me, and I feel like the traveling guys who are just there to party will be a lot of what I'm looking for. I am looking forward to Free Love, too, and will definitely bring lots of condoms. I am worried about herpes, though, because everyone is always sharing pipes and shit. I could just keep from kissing any girl that I wind up fucking, but that's kind of bad form.
