1980's woodland camo is best for Appalachia. Since everyone hates on the US Army ACU pattern so much a lot of ACU gear is available cheap. I buy Green textile dye form Hobby Lobby and dye the gear and think it looks good afterward.
1980's woodland camo is my favorite but I am down with Army ACU after dyeing it at home. The bottle of dye costs like $5.
When you consider how cheap you can get kitted out in ACU it is worth taking an hour to dye the stuff. Plus it looks good once it is dyed a darker green. IMHO

Since it depends on your environment, the best "universal camo" would unironically be all light grey or black. Something that will help obscure the very obvious of a human against the horizon. Something that will help conceal your shape at a distance.
