I highly doubt throwing a lure at the top end of the range rating will break a rod unless it's a junk rod or you really just huck it mindlessly. The real problem is that it usually just feels like shit. Middle of the rating range is usually what feels best, sometimes the minimum, just depends on the specific rod.

Figuring out someplace else to fish other than your local handicap-accessible, heavily pressured, stocked reservoir is often the first step, because catching pressured stocked bass doesn't teach you much of anything about fishing or natural fish behavior. That's why Bass Boomer can spend a decade "fishing" and still not catch much of anything even after buying a surplus Navy sonar cruiser.

what are some good value jigs? Looking to complete a bass tackle box, still jigless. Looking for: Structure Jigs (flipping/pitching), Swim Jigs, Football Jigs, Finesse Jigs, Weed/Grass Jigs. Don't need the highest quality/price. Was thinking 3 colours in each, natural (pumpkin/watermelon/craw), black/blue (or other dark) and white (or light/bright/chartreuse). Also what trailers? Because small fish can easily bite the worm off the hook before you can even notice what is happening if you dont have a float. If you have any slack in your line it might be already too late to set the hook when you feel something. Not all fish are dumb fuckers that just swallow the bait and swim away to let you know the fish is on.

Nikko is BY FAR the toughest there is. Too tough in certain situations, for example you can't rig them weedless because the hook won't come out when a fish strikes. You can literally stretch them by hand and they will not break unless you are very strong.

Also you have less gut hooked fish when you can do hook sets early. Some fish might lift the bait up and you cant feel this but you can see when the float rises up.

my $30 Shimano Sienna FG that is going on 3 years old is just as smooth and silent as day 1. Meanwhile, two of my $100+ reels are noticeably choppy and noisy. What the actual fuck my dudes. I've never dunked them or thrown them in sand/dirt. They are all greased well too. The only real complaint about the Shimano is that the bail feels like it could easily bend if you were careless since it's so thin. I feel like I got beanboozled on reels.

I don't think you should spend more than $200 for a rod or a reel, mid tier is definitely where it's at, but a high end spinning reel does feel nice. My 2 Stella's are so smooth, the bail clicks and feels perfect, drag is smooth as silk too, even under load it is smooth as butter, never gear binds, built like a tank and sealed up completely, there's just a lot that goes into one and it definitely feels like it. Definitely don't need one though.

Eagle claw rods aren't awful but they're not great, I'm sure you'll like the new one better
I was tempted by the cyan. The 8 weight blank I bought is actually going to become a spinning rod, my hyper finesse v2, I'm hoping that by going from a 5weight graphite blank to an 8 weight fiberglass blank I'll still be able to get good distance on tiny lures while getting more backbone for hook sets

Does /out/ do any multi-species fishing? Rather than going after some specific fish every time you try to catch as many different species as you possibly can. Its a lot of fun and there are lurking all sort of fuckers that you can never catch with generic tackle.

When fishing for Bass i've caught pike and walleye, even crappie. I mostly fish for bass/walleye/pike/crappie as they are in my lake. I've ventured to a couple other lakes to fish for muskie (caught one in my life over a decade ago), lake trout (caught two one time in Georgian Bay). This year I plan on going for venturing into the backcountry with the hopes of catching brook/rainbow/brown trout. Essentially I usually have a target species each time I go out but that target species always changes and I often catch other fish than just the target species.

Most of my fishing trips I'm going to bring one bait and a few lures. Sure I could catch multiple things, and I'm happy to but it usually doesn't work that way.

There is a pond I like to go to. It has bass, bluegill, crappie, and carp. If you want to catch the bluegill or crappie you need a red wriggler worm on a small hook. If you use too big of a hook, the kind you might use to put a nightcrawler on to catch the bass, then the bluegill will bite it but not be able to fit it in their tiny mouths. The carp want completely different stuff.

Its easy to target the crappie and bluegill, they have specific areas of the pond they hang out at. With the right setup anyone could catch one. For the bass its just not that easy. One day they will bite on a worm, another day they stare at it and swim away. Basically I don't know how to catch them consistently, but I'm pretty sure if I did it would involve a setup that wouldn't be as good at targeting bluegill or crappie.

Hello fellas, pardon my blog post, but do you have any recommendations on a surf rod that'd fit inside my normal luggage on a plane?
I have a 9" 2 piece Penn rod but it's enormous and my local airline wants 200 dollars to ship it in a travel tube! I don't live close to the sea so I can only fish occasionally.

Also, I'd appreciate your opinion on a good 4000 reel, my Penn pursuit III is no good, after just two short trips, the bail re-opens when reeling the line for some reason. I have to close it and then align the line to the catcher every cast.

So far I've lost a few lures and even my first ever saltwater fish to that stupid reel. Worst 50 bucks I've ever spent on fishing gear so far...
Got skunked on both trips, lol, but I ain't giving up!

If you are going on vacation, it's better to rent out a rod for fishing. If you are moving somewhere, it's probably easier to just buy a new rod. Not every surf fishing requires a long rod as well.
What's your price range on the reel. The bail shouldn't break from just 2 trips. Are you closing the bail manually after casting?

Where in baja? It ranges from touristy with different services readily available to tiny fishing villages where you're lucky to be able to get ice. I usually just fly my own rods down there, idk why it's so expensive for you, usually only $50 for me to check them. Maybe look into the specs at the airline and see if you can figure out a more compact way to pack it?

buy the eva foam stuff instead of carpet. you don't have to get the expensive "name brand" version, there are copies on Amazon. you will get tired of hooks getting hung in the carpet, or getting mud/dirt all in it when you get in and out on banks. also doesn't get heavy when wet. either way, you can buy some closed cell foam boards to cut to size and put between the ribs on the floor to build it up level/flush with the ribs, and then add a single top layer of some kind of plastic/acrylic or whatever slick and flexible stuff as your main floor. add your carpet or eva pad on top of that. if you don't wanna do all that, there are also things you can buy like horse mats, kids mats, ect to lay down and be a minimalist. That's exactly what happened to me. I did le jon boat to bass boat conversion and it was so heavy I couldn't take it out by myself. All I'm going now is cutting into the bench seats for storage and putting a hatch there to access it. I already have the launch wheels on the back so I can put it in a lot of different waters around me. I'm also doing a small wood platform on the small front bench to get in and out, and a little thing so I can put a trolling motor in the front.
But I don't want to put floors down though because it adds weight, can that eva foam stick right to the aluminum bottom?

yeah, wood framing adds weight quick. hell, even just the one sheet of plywood for the floor adds a lot. yes, the stuff will stick to the bare aluminum, but the issues is that the ribs will be sticking up higher, so you can easily stub your toe or trip. if that doesn't matter, it's the lightest method, and will still look/feel good. I actually have the smallest jon they make basically, a 1032, so having pedestal seats and shit makes it tippy as hell anyways, standing in the center floor between the benches being the lowest point of the boat is really stable though. here is an example of the foam I'm talking about.

I have a 1232 from 1965 that I bought on FB marketplace for $150 lol, it's worked amazingly and I used 3/4" plywood and 2x4s to make a front casting deck, middle floor, and a back bench and it was way too fucking heavy.
I don't mind the ribs honestly and I've known about the foam for a while but it's expensive as fuck so I was thinking of just going with the standard home depot indoor/outdoor carpet.

yeah esox flies can be tricky. tying with synthetics has helped me a lot, though some of my 12 inch beast flies have literal egg sinkers in them to make them sink, i think my heaviest ones are half an ounce. i hit myself in the back with one of those when a sudden gust of wind caught me off gaurd, it was not nice.

My eagle claw is fine but definitely a budget rod. The reel seat adhesive failed so I had to super glue that and now it's fine. One of the snake guides popped out of the wraps but I was able to jam it back in. The two sections of the rod never fit together snuggly so at least a dozen times the top section has flown off while casting but if I lick the male end before I insert it it will stay in for the session. Besides that the rod is rugged and has survived the abuse I've put it through. I can't count the number of times I've whacked the tip against branches and the undersides of bridges and it's held up so far. I'm hoping the upgrading to S-glass (I think the eagle claw is E-glass?) will give me a bit more power because the eagle claw has trouble throwing some nymph rigs I can easily throw on my graphite rod. All that said, I've caught tons of fish on it.

You can do hollow ties which are sparser but look big or you can add some lead wire to the hook. The hollow ties keep the weight and bulk down wich improves castability. The wire adds weight but it counteracts the air resistance from the hair making it cast better. You can also do both which makes a 12" fly feel like nothing.

I want a musky this year, I nailed a couple >35" pike last year on the fly and I am hooked.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever found at a fishing spot? On two different occasions(yes TWO) I saw used condoms thrown down on the bank in close proximity to floating dead bass. Nah I just slept in this morning, I acquired a small freshwater eel. He's legal size but I would've released him if he wasn't gut hooked. I used a small circle hook and 1/2 a chicken heart for bait.

I saw a literal rat's tail on this bridge I was fishing on. Like on the handrail, there was a severed tail, clearly from a rat.

I think maybe someone caught a rat in a trap and decided to use it for bait and cut the tail off for scent. It's the only explanation that makes any sense to me, other than someone on too much drugs of course.

I've tried dubbing loops like Brammer does but it didn't turn out as well as I hoped, probably need more practice but bucktail is expensive. I don't even use dubbing loops for synthetics anymore, I find that I get a better profile tying in directly. Even for round heads like the black fly in this picture (before any trimming btw).

I'd imagine he's using dead ones recovered from traps, hooking a rat would be so much hassle and a nasty bite risk. You might be able to make it work if you just tied a rat to a hook shank and flicked him into a high current river, maybe even with a float.

I've never tied a live rat to anything, but I imagine it's not worth the benefits.

UL is common for trout because you really don't need to throw any lures over 1/8oz for them. 8lb test briad is more than enough for any freshwater trout. You might want a 3-6lb test mono/fluro leader unless the water is super turbid.

thats actually not rust, thats an electroplated bronze finish that is supposed to help prevent rust. it doesn't do a great job but its a step up from bare steel, if only a small one.

Monterey has tough beaches, steep surf zone and very loose sand. Trudging through it is a task by itself but yes, productive waters from what I gather. I feel like it would be hard to cast under yourself, working the dock from a different angle would be a better bet if possible. Most every type of lure works fishing docks though. You could bounce around a wacky rigged stick bait or shakeyhead near the pilings. A moving bait like a vibrating jig, swim bait or crankbait fished parallel to the dock can produce some strikes too.

Those are asisst hooks and are used for vertical and shore jigs. The technique is popular basically everywhere in the world except the USA for some reason (although vertical jigging is quite common). Shore jigging is my favorite way to fish.

Try everything. Depending on the dock, they're either EXTREMELY hard to catch as everyone has tried to get them, or they're ridiculously piss easy (typically this is due to it being illegal to fish said dock).

I raise guinea pigs as protein on my homestead so sometimes I'll use one as bait if it becomes sickly. Tape a coue syrefoam pontoons to it so it doesn't drown immediately and rig some treble hooks to that and leave it out to soak. The vibrations they make by trying to swim is irresistible to predators. The alligator gar love 'em lol.

90% of the time I use a uni. But other knots that were worth learning were:

1. FG knot
2. Uni-snell knot
3. Spider-hitch
4. Surgeon's loop
5. No-slip loop not
6. Palomar knot.
7. Kiwi plait
8. Crazy alberto knot

Totally dependent on the application like making hi-lo rigs, attaching tippets, splicing lines, and what type of game you're after. For example, there's no reason to tie a bimini if you're not targeting anything about the 50lb class.

With how good fishing lines are these days you could probably get away just doing double/triple overhands for everything and be fine.

for casting, a good hard stop cant be over emphasized both on back cast and forward cast, that stop is what transfers all the energy in your rod to your line. you also need to hesitate on false casts longer than you think

Wooly buggers actually teach a lot of skills: measuring proportions, counter wrapping, building under bodies, and if you do dubbing loops instead of chinelle you can learn that too. Pheasant tails are good, adams dry flies, and parachute Adam's. Clouser minnows are a good one to learn basics of bucktail and how to tie in dumbell eyes. Wire body soft hackles are good to learn soft hackles and tight wire control.

If you want general purpose you want a 9 foot 6 weight, bluegill will still put a bend in it, but you'll have backbone for smaller streamers for bass and pickerel and pike and even smaller carp.

You could bump up to 6lb line if you were really that worried, it's still pretty thin and limp. Choosing UL or L really depends on the lures you will be throwing and not the fish. UL gives you more options, but will get more of a workout on big fish obviously.

Any other unconventional fish you can eat out here? I know the west is fucked due to red tide, & the locals in Deerfield tell me everything's basically going extinct so I should "enjoy eating fish while I still can". Problem I have with jetty fishing is all the little pickers that steal your bait. When I was using a similar rig, I'd get some nibbles then big rattles as the bream takes the hook, needed to strike straight away or the fish would get off. Was always a bream, and after the rattle the bait was always gone. Only other tip I have is threading 2 gang hooks through the eye of your bait helps keep it on the hook. Never seen anyone catch mackerel from the jetty, let us know how it goes.
