I'm almost 20, i have a decent job and i don't want to go to college. The past couple years of my life i've been really badly depressed. I don't fill fulfillment in life. I need to go out. Explore the wilderness. I want to hitchhike and train hop accross the country. My questions are.
Is it possible to train hop accross the country? is it dangerous (Regarding railway police)?
How can i mantain and income enough for basic neccesities?
Can i return to a normal life after years of hobomaxxing?
Is it college worth it?
And is there any other tip you could give?
Apart from this you can take this a regular hobomaxx thread (Food stamps tricks, etc)

As someone who was once in your shoes, you’re 20 anon… Its normal to feel this way. Lost and uncertain. I never hobomaxxed but i did a lot roadtripping all around the country at 18 cause i fet the same way and sure it was a wonderful experience, learned a lot about the world and myself. But at the end if the day its not going to cure your depression thats deeper than something traveling can fix. My suggestions though is don’t hobomaxx like a retard, you said you have a good job. Save up for the next year. Put away $10k. Leave in your car and you can survive on that for months and not have to hop trains and struggle like poor retard. Seeing the world is much comfier that way.

Yes you can. The odds of you losing your life train hopping are higher than you finding meaning from train hopping. You have a decent job, look into sailing or overlanding or something. Most people only hop trains because they are poor. There are better ways to travel and see stuff than noisy, dirty trains.

Yes train hopping is dangerous and it's not the railroad police you need to be worried about. It's losing a limb or your life, or getting beaten or robbed by actual hobos that you need to be worried about. There's a lot of things on a train/rail yard that can kill you if you don't know what you're doing, and anyone that does know what they're doing will see you for a green kid oogle that is to be chastised or robbed. As far as money, ask yourself this, are you willing to panhandle or are you a talented musician that can make money busking? My advice: since you have a job, save up your money, buy a car and spend part of the summer rubber tramping and camping in national parks. You won't throw away your future, you will get your young wanderlust out of your system and you will see that actual vagabonding is not for you.

Here's a trick I've used. Hang around gas stations, notice their delivery schedule. When they're carrying shit inside, just grab a box from their open truck.

You might get unlucky, it might just be candy bars or some shit like that. That's calories anyway. But if it's eggs, or jerky, or nuts, lucky you.

Also consider food banks. Many are religious. But attending a sermon for some food is a small price to pay when you're hungry

I can't share my experience with train hopping, but I know that there are lots of facilities along the Appalachian Trail, and yeah you can probably shower at those, too, as well as eat with church sermons.

Yes. The US has a very thorough network of freight lines, and they're well documented and available online if you search.

Yes. People misunderestimate the speed and solidity of the equipment and either get kicked out or sucked in between and cut in half. Only get on a train that's stopped or if it's JUST started moving.

Save up. If you want to hobomaxx, you are taking a break from employment. Save up and learn some trips and tricks from frugal people online.

Generally, no. If you have a specific path and high-paying career you're aiming for, it may be. But I can already tell that you don't, so don't bother. Get life experience and learn some practical skills instead.

Yes. I have lots.
1. Don't become too friendly with fellow travelers. They will either rob you, assault you, take advantage of you, or get you involved in drugs. Be friendly, polite, but don't get attached. Don't do anything that indicates you have money or anything of value. Dress shabbily and stay dressed shabbilly (but that doesn't necessarily mean unclean).
2. Don't wander around rail yards. Find a ditch or wooded area nearby, scope it out to see where thru-trains stop and trade-off, then wait for nightfall to catch something. You can probably identify potentially good catch-out spots if you put in the time online ahead of time and casually observing your local railyard (as long as it's on the mainline).
3. Most intermodal cars (which carry the shipping containers) have floorless bottoms... just an "X" crossbeam. Very dangerous to ride. Wait for a bergundy-coloured one because they usually have a floor. Grain hoppers with a hole and a floored porch are much more comfortable to ride.
4. Be out of view when passing through populated areas because the public and foamers often turn riders in.

5. Bring earplugs. Trains are extremely loud. Also, dress in layers. Even in the south, riding a train at night is cold. Also, unless you have a grain car with a hole, you will get wet.
6. Pick a destination. Don't just ride aimlessly. Find a spot to get to, explore that spot, meet some people there, then move on.

(Fun fact: the guy who did that used to be my parents' mailman).
Buses are a good way to go between cities if there isn't a busy mainline, but they're relatively expensive in my experience.
