/out/ hiking shoes for summer? Looking for a buy-once-cry-once quality.

Highly recommend iron rangers from red wing. They handled a mountain hike like it was nothing. Absolutely no foot pain. Might be too hot to wear in the coming summer months.

Surprised someone actually hiked In iron rangers. Their soles are not really designed for hiking and are more a work boot. Leather boots should be perfectly fine for any weather it just has to fit well, be breathable, and you gotta wear the right socks. I do like my Merrells tho and have done decently long hikes with a 50lb pack in them.

iron rangers are pretty good work boots but i couldn't imagine hiking in them. red wing's best suited boot for hiking is probably the irish setter. if i wanted a resoleable boot for hiking i'd probably go with something from one of the PNW brands (very expensive and fucked up sizing) but russell moccasins also makes a pretty good resoleable hiking boot.
personally i think unless you're really strapped for cash modern non resoleable boots are just all around better in every conceivable way other than an environmental/eco perspective. paying about 50 cents a mile for 5x better boots is worth it to me. the only thing that doesn't sit well is the environmental impact, but you can take your old hiking boots to the nike store and they'll recycle them into playground material for kids.

It was mostly to break them in and stress test them. Always have worn boots so sneakers just feel weird to me. It's probably cringe but I don't care at this point.

Picked up these Merrell Nova 2 trail runners earlier this month, have taken them on /out/ings a few times already, quite happy with them.

On the way up a mountain this Sunday we had to squelch through several patches of mud (the kind with bark and stick chunks in it) in 40ish degree weather. Got a bit soaked through the mesh, but Darn Toughs and the shoes were dry by the end of the day.

No kidding I knew a girl who hiked some serious North Rim trails in cheerleading shoes.
I looked them up afterward, but she was wearing some almost slipperlike things.
Not saying they are for everyone, but if you are in really good shape, they worked for her.

I have a pair of Iron Rangers and they are horribly uncomfortable such that I almost never wear them anymore. Feels like walking on bricks barefoot and makes my feet sore after a day. Is there anything that makes these boots absorb shock from footsteps better?

No idea about red wing stuff, but don’t buy gtx Moabs. They’re shit in slush and snow, and if it’s warm enough that that stuff has melted, you’d be better of with the Moab vents. They dry out waaay faster.

All that said, after couple pairs of Moabs, I alternate between lows renegades, and altra trail runners depending on weather, unless I need crampons. Having a couple pairs of specific shoes/boots is much better than one pair that’s intended to be a jack of all trades. Hiking boots are hot and heavy, trail runners don’t keep your feet dry or warm. B2 boots suck generally, and should only be worn when needed.

It's not designed to be the most comfortable boot you've ever worn but It definitely makes your feet stronger and gets more comfortable as it breaks into your foot shape. Yes I killed my feet for a year wearing them everywhere from work to recreation. The boots shape is fine but I walk heel to toe as an unbreakable habit from childhood and the shock kills my feet with them in a way my Florsheim shoes don't. I have tried several inserts with them and they help but it's still painful to walk in them after a few days.

Do I just take them to a cobbler and ask what they can do to make it better or is there general advice that would make them more comfortable? I don't care if they wear faster, as it stands I'd rather have a usable boot that needs replacement soles more often than one that is unbearable to wear and sits in my closet.

I will, taking them to a cobbler this evening to see what can be done. I like the way the original soles look to be honest, it's a very classy look but as stated before, I'd rather have a wearable boot than one that merely looks good. As for off-road grip that's not an issue, I rarely wear these for anything other than pavement anyways as I have a pair of hiking boots for off-road excursions and climbing. I will ask about the extra thick cork lining. Appreciate the help anon.

No problem you can also ask the cobbler to add a leather midsole and a leather heel stack but that will probably increase heel height and be more money than just putting a new outsole on it. It will however look like a nicer shoe rather than just the crepe outsole.

Except for winter snows or boggy, I wear trail runners for non-alpine adventures -- all 50 states, 100 countries, and all seven continents.

GTX and like don't dry off, retain moisture, grow heavy, stink, and they are wet after activity in any event.

Buy and use gear that dries, and you'll be more comfortable.

DarnTough socks and Injinji liners work for me.

I bought Scarpa Mojito Trail for the summer and ended up using them most of the year so far outside of snowy conditions.

They're not maybe extremely breathable because they got no mesh or anything, but I got the model without goretex so they're good enough for me. Personally I'm a sucker for Scarpa because I have oddly shaped feet and their lacing that goes all the way to the front which allows for good fit no matter what.

runners use foam midsoles which require expensive machinery to resole. too cost prohibitive for cobblers to have.
rumor is some guy in seattle has one and resoles runners/hiking boots but i haven't found his website.

What are the pros of traditional hiking shoes/boots compared to trail runners?
I have picrel (local Estonian brand, I bought them from the factoryb in Tartu) and I've been liking them but I'm always wondering whether they're not overbuilt (more weight) for standard hiking.
Mine are about 750g, which seems an ok weight, but still more than trail runners.

something than dries is my main criteria now, I've had to hike with wet shoes that wouldn't dry over several days twice now, very uncomfortable and got a foot fungus. They're hard to get rid of

#1 reason i switched from boots to runners whenever possible.
i wish more companies made trailrunners with just straight up nylon mesh uppers and no padding. saucony does it but not too many others. love my runners that dry out in a half hour.
