Hey guys, I need help picking the ideal soap for /out/ uses. I have a few requirements:

>must be liquid (don't see any advantages with a bar)
>must be able to use to clean body, hair, and dishes
>must be biodegradable and /out/ safe for wildlife
>should be concentrated enough to be light to carry, but not so concentrated that I need tons of water to rinse; I live in Arizona, so I usually hike spring to spring, etc. style, and water is scarce sometimes.

While there's advantages to bar soap when you're outdoors, there's actually not much of a medical benefit to antibacterial soap unless you're immunodeficient, or if you have an infectious disease you're sharing bath water with.

OP here, yep, that's EXACTLY what I was thinking for antibacterial use. By springs, I mean 80% algae filled cattle troughs. Would like to have something I could clean dishes with, without having to spend time squeezing water through filters, and using up their use life (which is already hampered by the algae, dirt, etc. Our warm temps mean cesspools of junk in springs)

Either way OP, look up Hunter's Specialty Scent'A'Way. It's sort of pricey and comes in both bar and liquid. It's an enzyme cleaner that works pretty damn well for removing basically anything from hair and skin, and the enzymes also act as a natural antibacterial agent.

Also forgot to add, you should probably boil the water you're washing your dishes with, and then heat them dry over the fire.

You still have to rinse the soap off and if the water's contaminated you're going to need a sanitary rinse.

If you're using enzyme soap, don't using boiling water. Enzymes begin to denature at about 37 degrees C (Depends on the enzyme) so boiling water will just destroy the enzymes.

Here's what I said again, paraphrased so it doesn't hurt feelings, and with a little elaboration for clarity:
1. The human body naturally stinks.
2. Constant bathing serves more of a social than hygienic purpose anyway.
3. Since you're not in society, but in the woods, there is no need to constantly be sudsing yourself up.
4. Dishes can be cleaned pretty easily with clean water, rocks and sand. You don't have to sterilize them in steaming hot water (btw- your cooking pot will sterilize itself the next time you put it over your stove).
5. The damage done to the environment by the pollution and suds (even biodegradable soaps don't biodegrade right away) is hard to justify unless you're so overly self-conscious about your body that you're in the outdoors for other reasons than a pure love of nature (i.e., maybe your boyfriend dragged you along).

What the fuck are you talking about? Dry your shit off before packing it away. Bacteria, and by that I mean bacteria that are pathogenic to humans, can't live, much less multiply, on a cold, dry metal surface. If you're really paranoid, just heat your cooking pot up with your stove for 30 seconds before putting food in it, and every surface will be sterilized - not like that doesn't happen when you're cooking anyway.

I'm not saying that it's impossible to get a rash when living without showering, but you'd be surprised at how well the human body is made. Your skin is not going to start falling off just because you went a week without your morning shower. Keep your feet from getting too wet and staying wet for days, and you'll be fine.

It's not liquid, but it does everything you need. At least, you can't spill it, that's one advantage, not to mention, it's much more concentrated, something you require.

You can wash anything with it, so that includes body, hair, clothes and dishes, and household cleaning too. I brush my teeth with it when on a hike; it contains soda, so it's pretty good for this, though it contains glycerin which leaves an unpleasant oily later on your teeth, and has a quite special taste.
It is biodegradable, though it isn't 100% safe. No soap is, don't fool yourself, 'biodegradable' only means it breaks down into things naturally found, not that it doesn't harm anything.

It is highly concentrated, a cube lasts me and my GF a couple months, it's just 100% soap with a quite aggressive pH, so you can't really find better than this without harming your skin. Well actually, I hope you don't have a sensitive skin, because it WILL harm your skin. Same for brushing your teeth, it isn't for everyone either, as it may rape your mouth.

It's very, very easy to rinse. I can wash, rince and dry myself with the same microfiber towel, wringing it every time, which is quite handy; once I'm done, I wrap the bar in the towel, so it's covered with soap and the next time I'll only have to wet it to wash.

It's not antibacterial, but then, antibacterial soaps are actively harmful to nature and aren't biodegradable, so you can't get both. And finally, it has a very strong, bitter scent of olive, which feels very natural and blends well with nature's scents, but it doesn't stick anyway.

Now there are two of these: Marseille and Alep soap. They're very similar, though Marseille soap is more aggressive, Alep is softer but more scented. The hardest part is finding REAL, traditionally made soap, as you can find pretty much anything going by those names.
Both come in the form of pic related, brownish cubes, greenish when wet.

I spent a lot of time searching for soap, and it's the best one.

For body only alternatives, there's Rhassoul.
It's basically argile, just add water to form a paste, apply it on your skin, leave it for a couple minutes, then remove and rince with a little water, or just leave it like this and it'll go off on its own. It uses very little water, and it'll clean your skin without harming it nor touching its protective layer, which means that it's not that efficient at cleaning, but still it's enough to keep you clean.
On that topic, contrary to popular belief, that protective layer only takes ~30 minutes to be restored, and it doesn't make you immune either, so it's still okay to take showers. But still, when /out/, it could make a difference. It's a nice thing to pack along with Marseille/Alep soap to give your skin some rest, so you can keep actual soap for actual cleaning.

Then there's Manuka honey. Yeah, washing with honey may sound weird, but it works. It's antibacterial, and a great moisturizer. Like Rhassoul, it won't actively 'wash', only keep you clean.

There are a couple more interesting (well, vaguely interesting), but I'll need to check my old notes on soap to find about it. I myself use Alep soap most of the time, and Rhassoul once in a while, especially in very hot countries, I find it more fitting for some reason, and that's really the best solutions you can find, everything else is smalltime in comparison.

Thing is, we're not that used to it anymore, especially us, born in first world countries and using a computer every day. Natural selection can't get to us, our method of discrimination isn't based on survival but on the ability to reproduce, so we grow weaker with each generation.

And even then, people back then didn't live that long, take that into account. They only survived long enough to reproduce, but they still for many hygienic reasons which they could have prevented by taking a shower once in a while.

So it's not like you need to take a shower every day, but if you never take one, diseases will get you.

It really depends on what's on your fingers. The human mouth is remarkably well-suited to killing a wide variety of organisms that could do you harm, and most of those that exist in "dirt" simply aren't going to be pathogenic, at least when ingested in small quantities.

If you're thinking that the average lifespan several hundred years ago was 35 and that we've come a long way since then, then you're in for a surprise. That number is largely skewed by a higher infant mortality rate, and people who lived past a certain age on average lived a pretty long life. And no, hygiene was not the main factor in the decrease in infant mortality, nor in the increase in life expectancy of the elderly.

Technically you're right, since there are 10-40 million bacteria in a gram of dirt.

It's not that dangerous to healthy people since it's a "low pathogen" (I don't know the english word.) It's mostly dangerous to diabetics and such.

I find your two answers here to be contradictory, at best. On the one hand, you make reference to humans as an archaeological animal that lived in groups without regular bathing since as many as a million years ago; yet on the other hand, you claim that they were able to do this just fine, despite smelling bad and not bathing nearly as much as we do today, if at all.
…Is it possible that you are simply ignorant of the fact that up until 100-150 years ago, personal hygiene for people – homo sapiens like you and me – did not include daily showers?

I know because I’ve done lots of camping trips where I didn’t bathe or use soap for 5, 7, 12 days, and sometimes longer. I’m still here, among the living, perfectly healthy.

I think it’s a very simple claim that I’m making, but you seem to be going to great lengths, and trying very hard, to disbelieve it. That’s fine too, I guess, but I wish you would just say clearnly that you prefer to live in a fantasy land.

This is a poor excuse for a fallacious appeal to nature. When you put soap into the water of many ecosystems, fish, fish eggs, insects, and a whole host of native flora and fauna can be adversely affected. As in, die. Fortunately, we can just leave it at that. I never claimed that dirt was 100% sanitary. Nor that one should forego all cleaning while in the outdoors. Just that soap really isn’t required. It goes without saying that you should still avoid touching feces, rotting animal carcasses, and whatnot, without washing your hands in clean water before touching food. Believe it or not, but you can still get your hands pretty clean without soap. It just takes a little longer.

All the times I’ve seen people make sweeping claims about human lifespan increasing over time, they have referenced the average. If you have data that is different from this, then please present it, along with your sources.

Drinking water: betadine 1 drop per litre and allow half an hour to do its work. No issues drinking water from ponds with cows standing in them even.

A silly assertion. By your logic, bacteria can live in soapy water, which is not exactly true. Regular soap does kill bacteria. It may not kill all kinds of bacteria, but it does kill many of them. All soap is antibacterial. It's the nature of soap. I make my own soap, it's not a hard thing to do. I've been doing it for years. Homemade soap would work well for laundry, dishes, hand and body uses. Shampoo, maybe not so much. Homemade has glycerine still in it, and that will make your hair feel like ass.

There's my teo cents worth.
