Army smocks/jackets are fantastic /out/ jackets if you ask me, but I don't want to be a milsurp faggot. Hence I'm considering pic related.

How about soft shells? What is so great about them?

Normally wear OD/ Black BDUs or Bundeswehr Moleskin trousers, on top I tend to purchase more consumer stuff.

Which would be better - the softshell, or the jacket? To be honest I don't really know what softshells are. Also, are the chest pockets usually big enough on softshells to hold a few things or are they just handwarmers?

Milsurp is some of the best outdoors clothing available and it's very well priced.
Bundeswehr milsurp is outstandingly warm, why hinder yourself by not using it?

Softshell vs Goretex/ Hardshell:

3 times more breathable
Way more stretch
Not as waterproof but will easily shed hours of light, dry snowfall
Not as windproof but blocks about 90% of the wind
BY FAR more comfortable in all but the nastiest conditions

Soft Shells compared to fleece:
Does not pill, i.e., will not start looking like a terry cloth rag
Resists water whereas a fleece acts like a sponge in rain and snow
Blocks wind that cuts right through fleece

Basically if you plan to go /out/ in extreme weather conditions, take a hard shell, for everything else, a soft shell should do.

I went cycling last night in my soft shell jacket and remained warm and dry (from sweat and the rain). I'd have probably been quite sweaty/ clammy in my hardshell.

What I usually do is like I used to do in the army; if it's cold, I put warm layers on under my smock. If it's raining, I put waterproofs on top of my smock.

I wouldn't feel like a twat when actually out though given no one will hopefully see me and my brief time in the cadets means I'm used to wearing such/slightly justified to continue doing so I hope.

This is basically why I made this thread. My military kit is great /out/ stuff but I just can't dress up like a soldier when I'm just on a hike (plus the SQMS would tear me a new one if I ripped it while pissing around on the moors by myself).

Hence I'm looking for alternatives.

The jacket I posted in the OP would be a great alternative to the smock, however the softshell would be more versatile since it would go with a normal outfit as well so could be worn just for a trip to town or whatever.
So currently I'm in a toss up between the two.

By the way guys, helikon make some really great /out/door kit, you should look them up. Not viralling I swear!

What do you want the jacket for?

>3 Season hiking
>High movement activities (i.e. climbing, running, cycling)

Softshell

>4 Season hiking (plus extreme rain/wind)
>Don't mind getting a bit clammy (if you don't cheap out this won't be a problem i.e. eVent/ Goretex)
>Full waterproofing is more important than getting slightly sweaty

Hardshell

As I mentioned before I use a Marmot Stormshield which keeps me dry in horrendous conditions and doesn't get clammy at all (in my experience) because I layer well and use breathable/ technical clothing.

I've recently bought the Montane Softshell and it is amazingly breathable, however I probably wouldn't take it to the Lakes at this time of year due to the fact the wind/ rain/ hellish conditions COULD theoretically penetrate it because it's water "resistant".

TL;DR I'd go for a hard shell and just layer clothing underneath. It's probably more bang for your buck. If you can buy both.

Protip: Don't cheap out and go for good, trusted brands and read review before you purchase!

I use Milsurp stuff, mainly an ALICE pack and MOLLE/PALS rucksack purely because that shit's tough as fuck and the MOLLE/PALS means I can turn a daypack into a 3 day pack pretty easily. I also wear BDUs, nothing camoflauge though. Out of interest OP, what would be the limit you'd put on someone wearing milsurp? Full battle rattle, just one set of camos or what?

Either top or bottom vestment, never both. If you have MTP trousers AND jacket on then you're either a soldier on his way to/from work, on exercise, or a twat - as far as most people in the army are concerned. (MTP is the current British army issue camo)

The jacket I'll be using for hiking/trekking, in temperate climates, year round. And possibly some hunting around home.

And FYI, the jacket isn't hardshell, it's water resistance properties are similar to the softshell I think.

I'm the guy who is trying to defend wearing DPM and I would even say that wearing one piece of MTP as a civvie is too far. It took years before the cadets where allowed to wear it given its low production and many months more for anyone to even acquire it. For a full-blown civvie to go to the effort of finding themselves some MTP to wear day-to-day is sad and tryhard. If they genuinely wanted just some camo milsurp for the woods then DPM is cheaper and dare I say better for British woodland.

Softshells are basically like a water resistant (by that I mean they literally are waterproof until you get to ridiculous rain storms), windproof, more warm and more breathable.

In terms of breathability, I took mine running the other day and it kept me at just the right temperature for the whole run whilst letting no rain in at all just wearing a thin running t shirt.

They're good in cold temperatures as long as you wear something underneath, but you can wear the softshell as a mid-layer if you want to because it is so breathable.

To sum it up, if a fleece and a hard shell had dirty, forbidden sex, it would produce a soft shell. I'd wear mine in all but the harshest weather conditions.

After a while maybe I would build up a collection of normal clothes suitable for such activities but when you're just starting out why would you bother with this when you can get a complete set of dpm plus boots and waterproofs for £30.

I've got all black, OD, tan or grey (earth colours basically), and a mix of milsurp and commercial stuff that works quite well. In terms of bags, equipment and field gear it's pretty much all milsurp, shit lasts forever. My ALICE pack was made in the 70s/80s and is still going strong.

Plus if you know you're gear is tough enough for war, it's sure as hell gonna last. One less thing to worry about

Sure seems Europe in here. My best jacket is what seems to be an old-er snowboarding (I don't snowboard) jacket. It's a Ride jacket, Cell series 5 if that means anything to anyone. Not sure but from what I can find it has 60g of poly insulation, and its 5k waterproof/breathable. I also like the pockets and the armpit vent zippers, and it's orange which will help you get spotted out there, it seems people want camo, not sure what Govt you think you're fighting but...
I figure this was $250 back in the day, and I got it for $40 at an upscale thrift store. Probably the nicest outer I ever had, but I'm sure you guys own stuff to put it to shame. Based on what I've said here does anybody have an opinion on my find? I live in Arizona, and rarely travel farther, so cold isn't a huge issue, probably never gets below 10F where I camp.

I use a Bergans jacket, not sure what the model is called, bought it a few years ago. The fabric is something called Dermizax membrane, OD green colour.

They provide enough protection against rain 90% of the time, keep you warm and are breathable. All you need is a rain jacket on top if it's pouring. Much better solution than one heavy, rain-proof jacket that will make you sweat like a motherfucker most of the time and weighs much more.

Well, softshells are designed to be more breathable and flexible, so you can practice a physical activity without having to deal with condensation, and gives you a decent protection from rain.
Hardshells are designed to be completely tight so you can never be wet, but it's not breathable nor flexible enough to practice a physical activity, otherwise you'll have to worry about condensation.

Either you're wet 10% of the time with a softshell because of rain, or you're wet 10% of the time with a hardshell because of condensation. Softshells will only protect you long enough to find shelter from rain, hardshells will force you to reduce your physical activity, it's only up to you to decide what's your priority.

Buy one with a zipper under the arms. You can also leave the zipper in front open and only use the buttons on the jacket. Suddenly your hardshell has the breathing capabilities you need.

Breathability implies protection, of course it's going to be breathable if you sacrifice protection, but that's not the point.
