So I've been seeing all kinds of talk on the net this year about how Bradford Pear's are the devil and they do nothing for biodiversity and are spunk blasters. I have a few on my property and debating on mulching them for fruit tree space this year. Are these things actually the devil or this another internet psyop/jewish trick?

if they are not a problem don't worry about them. they do have a tendency to blow over when they fruit, so if its near a structure maybe. I think they are beautiful.

They take to grafting well. Prune then get some Scions and attach tasty varieties to it.

By having them you are giving up the biodiversity you could have. Read or watch some of Douglas Tallamys work. Oaks in the eastern part of the US support by FAR the most biodiversity, starting with caterpillars. Do yourself and the environment around you and cut those fuckers down.

This is what I have been reading and leaning towards, thanks for providing a source for me to look further. Googling just gives me media bullshit and I can't tell if that is actually informed info or greedster tricks. Its looking like the bradford pear in the first place was the trick

If you go to youtube and search "Douglas Tallamy" you can find a lecture he does often which is about an hour long, and it explains the importance of native plants and trees, and just how much more biomass they produce for food webs over introduced species, its astonishing.
They're about an hour long and are full of good information.

Any tree that isn't native is a shit tree. You don't need to kill it though--just plant native evergreens around it and wait. Bradford pears only live about 30 years so it'll die on it's own before the evergreens overtake it in height.

Most landscape plants are not genetically diverse either. Anything you replace it with is likely to be just as bad when it comes to genetic biodiversity.

Most nursery plants are genetically the same and under extreme circumstance can succumb to the same disease and all die out. What you don't often see is that many grafted plants are virused and suffer insidiously. Seed-grown plants is what breaks monoculture and allows for biodiversity in disease resistance and other traits.

What is the ideal plant to replace it with? Since you are looking at fruit tree, look into something that is rare or seed-grown. Choose something not a cultivar if you really want to take it out of the ball park. Paw Paws are mostly seed-grown and genetically distinct plants.

There are some native plants nurseries that grow local Prunus species and other fruiting trees that are seed-grown. You will get shitty fruit no-doubt. But your other option is to get the typical fruit tree that has been vegetatively propagated a thousand times already and well it adds nothing to biodiversity.

If you go here you can put in your zip code and find out what trees, shrubs, and plants give you "most bang for your buck" so to speak. But you can rest assured that if you are East of the 100th parallel that Oaks, especially oaks in the white oak family are the GOAT tree.

My options are limited due to black walnuts on my property. Those might go one day too, but I have been looking getting a few varieties of Paw Paw to start producing a pretty rare fruit(I've never had it)
Otherwise I'm going to be putting up more peach and plum trees. I try to get varieties that are from my area or near(southern appalachia) but I do have to keep in mind there is a need for cold hardy varieties.
Either way, I'm probably nuking the bradford pears, I've identified 4 on my property since making this thread.
