Bought pic related, thought it would be a meme but it's extremely thick and great for splitting wood if you can find a heavy maul to pound it with. Also good for chopping brush. Not sure if the sheath is worth it though.

Silky for anything making you money and/or longer than 18 inches. The Forester brand knock off of the Zubat is a pretty good fixed blade hand saw.
I use a katana boy as my camping, firewood gathering tool. Plenty of good wood just hanging off of trees, most doesn't need to be split.

It dries fairly fast on its own if you don't shave your ass hair (which you shouldn't because one of the main functions of hair is pulling moisture from the body)

I got one, it's great. The leather sheath is ok but I'd just use a milsurp bayonet frog.
The old TST sheath with molle was better (and cheaper) but some cunt stole it and Varusteleka hasn't made it for years. The leather sheath is cheap af. The stitching is good but the leather will dry, crack, and fall off. There's a hard plastic scabbard (which comes free with the skrama anyway) glued inside it, so really you're paying for something you get for free anyway just covered in cheapo leather and with a very useless belt loop. I cut the loop off and replaced it with a karabiner which is 100x better. The snap fastening strap is pointless because the fit in the scabbard is so tight you'll never need to do the strap up.

those batteries are actually a collection of cells in series.
not to bore you with the technicalities but if you take them apart, check the cells (which look like AA batteries) and remove the dead cell in the series you can refurbish your own batteries. Usually one bad battery (one AA in the series) can be replaced and like magic the battery pack (the more accurate name for the power block) will work again.

tl;Dr take the battery pack apart and replace the dead cells.

I use my motorcycle- so I can carry more weight. I carry a jumper pack (that can start a 3500....) That has 2 USB ports and the charge takes about 10 hours on 120v and will last me about 2 weeks. (Over night charging my phone/my old battery powered fan/GoPro, or headphones. whatever minor item I need charging.)

Yes I agree stuff like headlamps are good to have swappable batteries because their size doesn't allow for full power light for more than 2 hours.

That's cool beans. Now that I live innacity my adventures are all in Falkor (my truck) which allows me to power anything for as long as I'm bumping through the bush. Would love to get a nice motorbike rig going someday though, just for the sense of freedom and adventure. Back when I lived on farms I just hoofed it everywhere and rechargeables would be dead after a day or two and then I would be forlorn, so my instinct is still to carry batteries or at least some battery packs.

petzl makes the highest quality headlamp. they have a few lines that use aaa batteries and also a few that use aaa batteries with a secondary internal battery backup.
also if battery degradation is the reason you're avoiding internal battery headlamps, JSYK you're supposed to use those with a battery bank thing in pass thru mode so the internal battery in your headlamp doesn't actually degrade or get used for more than a back up if it gets unplugged. its a non issue. only advantage aaa's have is availability for purchase in remote areas if you're a thru hiker. otherwise they're just fully obsolete.

reminds me of some good synthetic choices:
the ecwcs level 2 grid fleece is one of the best synthetic midlayers on a budget or for beginners. there's better stuff out there but its usually $80-150.
the ecwcs fleece baselayers are also a really good value for getting into winter backpacking. good choice if you are not spending for a set of heavy wool.

merino and cashmere sweaters from the thrift store are also a good budget choice for lighter weight thinner sweaters. tan and black ones are pretty easy to find. you just want to avoid v neck.
cashmere is a good choice for anyone with wool allergies. i find them with light cosmetic damage at goodwill all the time.

only real negative with those is no one carries them in their stores except walmart and some specialty ones(no getting more fuel/wait for mail in remote locations) also you CAN put them out, tongs, and a sealing can will do so, small one or it'll just burn most of it away as it eats the cans air up, let cool before opening

It's designed for masonry, but i also did my booties with it and can confirm they are now turbo water proofed. Just sank them into 15cm mud a few times a couple of days ago while out walking in the woods. Socks? Dry.

you hike, get HOT, sweat, cotton cools your body down and you feel refreshed. remaining body heat removes the sweat(leaving the salt/body odor) and now you stay warm during the night.

versus using it during the winter, you sweat, your body cools down, you get colder, you shiver, you swap out the sweaty flannel for dry flannel, take a hour to get warm again. but yeah, during the summer and warmer months, cotton is KING.
