Tenkara rods are the "finesse setups" of fly fishing, and offer delicate presentations, inherent tightlining, and high sensitivity (for detecting strikes, hooksetting, and imparting motion to the fly).
They're less expensive and easier to learn to setup and cast than reel fly rods, but mastering your technique once the fly actually hits the water is more demanding to begin with. At higher levels of expertise, the reel rod becomes more difficult to master.
