e-tool is good multi use
chops through branches and thick roots easy
single fold if you really need space, but no fold is best; double fold works but not as comfortably

I know axes are cooler but saws are way easier to cut actual trees with and they are also lighter

Saws also make less noise. In my /out/life style noise is important to keep down a lot of times.

But then again. I use a small portable propane stove... So no chopping required and a single green bottle last me. Almost a week's worth of cooking if not longer.

not too big. perfect for anything a small hatchet would do but so much more versatile when you have the long handle.
might want to look into an axe head that has the crowbar prongs AND a hammer side

I dont think the difference in performance is a big as people think. I had a friend go /out/ with me. we wanted a camp fire and found a large dead tree with many branches. to be nice i gave him my silky saw and I used my ax. after a minute or so he started to complain that I was keeping the better tool for myself because I was chopping though branches in a few swings where he was struggling with the saw. we swapped and again I started cutting through branches in a few strokes while he struggled with the ax. it was a good side by side comparison and demonstrated the important point that skill with a tool is required and that for medium sized branches the speed is equivalent. i honestly prefer the ax, because im not nice to my things an have broken a saw before.

The camp/hunting style axes are probably the best pack axes if you're out where you'll genuinely need an axe. Because while small hatchets are neat for light work, if you're doing anything remotely serious you want the ability to do a two-handed swing with a decent amount of lead-up.

you're talking about the ones that are like 3/4 length of a normal axe and 2 handable but not full size?
hard agree. hatchets are for cabins. out in the woods you either want a folding saw or a boys axe depending on how much wood you're processing.

hatchet vs saw if you know how to use both tools equally, the saw usually fells the tree faster and the hatchet usually limbs faster. but the margin is honestly not too big. its not like you're doing much hiking in a day if you're doing the kind of hiking where you're cutting trees down and building fires. you got all day anyways.
