>>2553481>recipe that's a pretty strong word for what I do! Breakfast is normally instant oats, I like the fruit and cream quaker ones, with added instant coffee and chocolate trail mix. Then evening meals are usually instant noodles with things added like crushed up doritos, trail mix, cheesy biscuits, that sort of stuff. Basically chuck in whatever adds calories and will make it taste nice.
I've got a kinda of, but not really, funny story about cold soaking. I hiked a Hayduke route last fall. The night before dropping down into the grand canyon I camped at the top of the nakoweap trail. There were two canadians there who were finishing their trip and we got chatting. At this stage I had eaten cold soaked instant noodles every evening for like ~30 days, so was joking about it with them. Hearing this one of them offered me a baggy full of refried beans they had dehydrated themselves! I was stoked. Two days later I down in the canyon and trying to ford the little colorado river, and long story short, ended up getting semi-swept away. I was soaked, a little shook up, but fine. Given the excitement I figured I was due some food so threw some of the beans in my cold soak jar, added the water, and hiked on while the re-hydrated. After an hour or so I found a nice beach and settled down to eat my beans. I was really looking forward to them. I crushed up some doritos, threw them in, then went to get my trail mix from the outside pouch on my pack. To my horror when I tipped them up over the jar instead of trail mix pouring out it was filthy, silty river water. I hadn't realised then when I got swept away the trail mix packet had filled with water. I thought about it for about 10 seconds, before deciding fuck it. I rinsed the beans off with some filtered water and chowed down, quietly hoping this wouldn't end up with my shitting my pants in the desert.
