No, and they don't even do it right. My grandfather's generation (the WW2 guys) never used those stupid gimmicky "ice rods" like the boomer in that pic. They jigged on a handline with an old-fashioned "jigstick" (basically just a line holding device with no reel). There's no point to either rod or reel because you're not casting and retrieving, just jigging vertically at a chosen depth, and you're not going to be playing a fish as you reel it in horizontally. Through the ice, you're just hauling them up as fast as you can. A reel only slows you down, as opposed to just chucking the stick aside and hauling the line in hand over hand. Ice rods and reels only exist for the manufacturers to milk more money out of people who didn't pay attention to the old-timers.
