Fly fishing always appealed to me although I lost a lot of respect for the sport when I recently discovered a youtube video about "banned flies" and how people are genuinely upset about certain fly colours as well as materials (mop flies). Getting geared up for doing some more crappie fishing this year than usual. Grabbed a nice panfish specific rod to throw some light jigs on. Came across these (pic related) while looking for baits to stock up on and I'm excited to try them out. Might not do me a ton of good bank fishing I'm my hometown but when I get to get out on a boat to drift-n-jig I think they're gonna be killer baits.

The underspins look good, they're basically just the pre-rigged swim bodies they have listed with a blade added. My uncle swears by bladed crappie baits when boat fishing, but I've never been particularly lucky with them myself. Always seem to do good with a good old fashioned grub on a jighead. But that little swimbait I said I grabbed is 2 inches which is a big appeal to me since I'm targeting 12"+ crappie

I bought some Eurotackle hardbaits that I plan to try this spring and summer. The Z-Spender, Z-Popper, and Z-Viber Micro. They have a clear with chartreuse color that will probably be really good for crappie and white bass. I've had good luck catching crappie on small suspending jerkbaits in august and september from banks.

Otherwise I'm a bih fan of collecting rocks and I've found some great crystals and fossils as well as some real obsidian/volcanic stones and a couple old arrowheads.

Very, very hard. They stay low, death roll, and take off in long heavy runs--especially when they get closer to the surface. If you get lucky, they might run with you for a bit at the start but once they near the top of the water they'll fight hard. If the lake isn't heavy with snags, you can fish moderate gear and just keep the drag set low while they run themselves tired. But if there are many snags in there you're going to want heavy gear to keep them in check and on path. And even then they still probably take you for a ride a few times. Tons of fun.

I made both of those posts. I mainly use a Lew's WMPSS70ML crappie rod for anything 1/8oz and under. It's got really soft top half similar to an ultralight but the backbone of a medium light once it's got a fish on. You don't really tear their lips since the rod absorbs all the fight.

Thats why I wasn't sure if ML might be a bit strong, ripping their lips, but its good to know you use something I've been considering getting anyway for long casting dropshots that I can now use for that as well. And I've already got a 6'9" ML too so ill be ready to try those out easily.

Yeah I see the moderate action on it, I'm sure that helps to not tear lips once hooked. Luckily I fish st croix which thankfully tend to have softer tips in general since they began as a walleye rod company (excluding their species specific rods). That 6'9" ML I said I use is an Avid and I've used it several times jigging for crappie and it handles them well, only ever tore one lip and I know I could've avoided it. The panfish rod I just bought is a standard croix panfish 6'4" light which I honestly think would do alright with those jerkbaits too, though I bought it to fish smaller jigs better. And the 7' ML I'm looking at is another Avid (they work really well for smallmouth fishing which is my main species target) so I think it'll do just fine for crappie too.

you insufferable autists keep talkling about fly fishing and I just went home and watched fly fishing for bass videos all night last night now I want a fly rod too. That'll be sufficient but you can start throwing bass bugs for way less than that. Get an Echo lift kit 8 weight, it's half the price and will get you bass fishing. As for line, I'd recommend floating; floating will easily cover the top 5 feet if the water column, and if you're really having trouble getting Down throw a 10 foot poly leader on there and now you have a sink tip.

As for what floating intermediate and sinking lines are; floating floats, sinking sinks (sinking rate is measured in inches per second and designated by a number. Sink 3 is 3ips sink rate, sink 6 is 6ips, etc) and intermediate doesn't really floating or sink, maybe 1.5ips or less
Also leaders are a scam. For bass you need 3, maybe 4 spools of mono to tie your leaders. 25lb for the butt, 20 for the mid section, 14 for the tippet, and if you are fishing smaller flies ypu can drop to 10lb for the tippet. 3 feet of #25, 2 feet of #20, and 3 feet of #14 or #10 will get you a nice 8 foot bass leader. If you're in heavy cover, 3 feet of 25 and 4 feet of 20 with a no slip mono loop and horse em out

Imagine recommending a bass fisher a floating line for streamer fishing. So many great streamers cannot be used with a floating line. I’d only use that setup on a shallow body of water or a marsh. Sinking line will be superior and more versatile for lake fishing. With that being said get an extra spool and have a couple line options.

To be clear, the leaders are all tapered so instead of with traditional spinning where you just put some mono or fluoro of one kind at the end, your leader will have multiple sections tapering it down, tied together with something like a blood knot. Tippet really is just a fancy word for thin line that is at the end of the leader. If you want to get technical you can go to https://globalflyfisher.com/leadercalc for calculations. The blue lines at the bottom of each formula are a visual representation of taper.

That rod will do the job. You might like an 8 or 9 Wt if you have access to pike fishing. I mainly run a floating line when I'm bass fishing since I'm fishing around weeds and snags. For flies recommend clousers, bulkhead deceivers, sliders, and bass buggers.

Granted there are flies that can't be fished on a floating line but there are also flies one cant fish on a sinking line, and a floating line can be made to sink but a sinking line can't be made to float.

Yeah there's a lot to learn when going to fly fishing from spinning gear. The multi piece leaders are ehsts called s Tapered leader and they're important cause they transfer the energy from the fly line in to the fly. With sinking limes however you can just run a 4 or 5 foot level leader. Tippet is just the term for the thinnest line in a leader, usually the last 24-36 inches but I've tied leaders with as much as 48 inches of tippet.

These are also good bits of advice, but really anything in the 2-6 inch range that looks like a baitfish, frog, or similar is a good option. Flies with bead heads or lead eyes will qink faster than flies without. And dibt forget poppers, divers, and other topwater options.

Finally got my Florida Fishing License so I can stop Pier Cucking. Did some canal fishing & got a dozen snapper on Squid. Here's the question. Would you eat fish out of these canals that run parallel to the beach as pictured? Some people told me not to because it's "stagnant water". Do I risk poisoning myself if I do that?

Any other big swimbaits I should try other than the hudd? Been fishing for striped bass in Southern California. Our waters have been really dirty and it’s still pretty cold for us here. Bite has been really slow for me

Has anyone sent in a Daiwa baitcaster in to get serviced through the warranty? Having a problem with mine not engaging from free spool, ill spin the handle and nothing will happen and will have to make the reel engage manually, then the retrieve will be normal. Read on some forum that it's most likely the kick lever or spring? I never got service from daiwa, but in my experience with shimano, it takes about a few weeks getting reel service this time of the year because they are usually back up with everyone getting their reels service at the same time this.time of the year

so I fished the intercoastal bridge there. Some roided up bald jogger sprinted past me saying something like "fucking fishing rods". He spat at me as he went by. I wasn't even blocking the bridge...am I a fag for fishing with three rods? dunno much about the Nexave since it's newer but the Regal is proven. It's basically similar to the Legalis and Exceler which are considered the best bang for the buck. the only thing with the Daiwas are that the spool is deep and holds an absurd amount of line, so you have to spool some backing on first or else you're forced to buy an unnecessary amount of line to fill it properly for optimal casting distance.not as noticeable with thick mono/flouro but wiith thinner braids it is.

Hey guys. I'm going fishing on my days off and want to catch some fish to eat since chicken rice and broccoli is getting old. I usually ike Jime the fish with an ice pick then cut the gill to bleed the fish, and throw the fish into the cooler. It's nice method, especially when fishing from a kayak for me because all I need is an ice pick and knife. Some people like to club the fish head but you'll need a fairy big and heavy club for a big fish

You can fillet the fish when you get home. Most fish are easily to filler and follow the same method. You can do anything with the filler from pan sear to bake. I like basic pan sear with basic breading, or with cajun seasonings, or lemon butter. At minimum, you should remove the guts and head if you want to bake or steam the fish whole (small fish palm size can be pan fried whole as well

The best method is to keep them in a bucket/live well/basket of some sort, transfer to a cooler with ice on the ride home, then kill and cook them at home. Depending on the length of the drive home the ice in the cooler is often enough to knock them out and then kill them. Don't want to kill the fish until you absolutely need to prior to cooking or storing in the freezer. The minute the fish dies it starts decomposing. My regular practice is to keep them in a basket/bucket, throw them in a cooler of ice on the way home, then they're already dead when I get there and ready to clean, then I have extremely fresh fish to cook fresh and to freeze while still fresh. If you are cooking them out at the lake/river/beach or something then feel free to kill them in public but be confident and know what you're doing. A swift blow to the back of the head will kill most fish.

ID on this fish? Was slaying sunfish in my neighborhood pond this morning with foam grasshopper flies and some bass poppers. This was by far the prettiest fish, I think warmouth but I’ve never caught one before.

not a warmouth looks like a pumpkinseed. it can get tricky, especially with hybrids. try to always take pics of them completely sideways so you can count fin rays/spines. that's the easiest way to identify them.

this is a warmouth, caught it this morning. coloration is very similar to a rock bass on this one though. that's why it can be confusing. the colors of sunfish vary by what water they're in, temp, sex, ect. once you've caught a lot you can often tell what it is before it's even out of the water, because some sunfish species attack a certain way compared to others. warmouth tend to strike out of nowhere, you might see a completely different fish eyeing the lure, then the warmouth comes out of nowhere unexpected. funny enough, this is the first warmouth I've ever caught out of that pond, and I've fished it for over 20 years. it's crazy how many species of fish can be in a pond, each living in certain spots. there are at least 10 species in this pond that I've caught so far, I'm sure there are more somewhere I just haven't casted at the right time of the year.

It was a nice stretch of stream about four miles into a wilderness preserve, so virtually no one else goes there. There were around a dozen native brookies in this pool.

They reacted to absolutely nothing except a tiny inline spinner (with one barbless hook) which I tied directly into my 3wt. After that, we took turns pulling out three of them.

The perfection loop is one of my favorite knots. It's one of the fastest knots you can tie. I use it for attaching sinkers to bottom rigs. Just make the loop big enough for the sinker to fit through and cow hitch it.

I don't know much about conventional fly fishing, I've only used a tenkara rod before.
Is a #5 rod/reel/line also ok for small creeks? Why/why not? There is a big river and a small creek flowing into, I want to fish both with the same setup.

It'll work but you'll be over gunned, you're going to wind up compromising somewhere. I think you'll be better off with a 4 weight, its enough to comfortably manage most trout or anything else under 16 inches but it's still a little much for 6 inch dinks. You can push a 4 weight and handle 20 inch fish with good technique on a 4 weight though. If you really want something for small water a 2 or 3 weight is the way to go, but for both you'll probably be able to get away with a 4.

I think it's easier to fish a small creek with a 5 weight than a river with a 4 weight, but the real answer is to have a 4 weight and a 6 weight. This allows the most flexibility for most freshwater.

My north fork composites rod blanks came in
The green one is an 8'6" 8 weight blank for my hyper finesse v2; I'm going to trim a few inches off the Tip and the butt to get it down somewhere around 7'11 or 8' even and I'll probably make it a two piece instead of a 4 piece, but it will definitely have microwave guides

The white blank is a 7'6" 4 weight and its going to be pretty basic. Red thread wraps and either silver or gold eye guides, but I'm going to put a fighting butt on it that's really as much of a bottom grip as anything so I can do micro spey stuff with it as well as overhead stuff instead of being stuck with just single hand spey.

Lipping is mostly bad when you hold them at an angle, or when the fish is too heavy to safely hold vertically. Proper procedure is vertical lipping (for smaller fish) or horizontal with one hand lipping and the other supporting the body (for big fuckers.)

That's a good starter set. The thing is you kind of lose enjoyment going out and throwing senkos or whatever other bait you've been successful with over and over again. It's nice to change it up. For example bass, get some senkos, worm weights, spinners, topwater frogs/berkley choppos/ploppers/poppers, swim jigs with creature trailers, paddle tail swim baits/jig heads, worm hooks, crankbaits and a couple other things that work, build a decent small box and at that point you're generally good, buying more after that is not really necessary and that's where people fall into the trap.

they fight well for freshwater fish, the only thing really comparable in my area is trout fishing with UL gear or a fly rod. Not into the 50lb braid drag a fish into the boat fishing, I use 8-10lb braid, and watching a 5+ lb bass jump out of the water 2-4 times before landing is awesome. Also watching them hit a topwater never gets old. More "fun" to fish than pike, walleye, sauger, crappie, bullhead, perch/sunfish/rock bass and sometimes musky. The excitement of landing a musky alone is great but that's just because they're a super rare catch and pike the excitement comes when you realized you hooked a 20+ pounder, but most of the time it feels like you snagged a log until you get it close to the boat. It's just fun man, can't really explain it. Maybe adrenaline?

I really wish I knew where the gun bass are. Here in Minnesota, Largemouth are the fish most likely to just up and play dead when you hook them. I’ve had musky fight me for half an hour on heavy tackle (50 lb mainline, size 5000 reel), and pike fight good too, unless I get them on my Musky rod as bycatch, but my PB largemouth was a 7 1/2 lb that ate a UL crank when I was fishing for bluegills with 4 lb test and a size 500 reel, she ran 10 feet to the bottom, and the rest of the fight I might as well have been reeling in a rubber boot full of mud.

I don’t think Ive ever had a bass over 2 lbs jump for me.

I fish saltwater so I have a lot more options (and calico/sand/spotted bay bass fishing is pretty much an upgraded version of bass fishing) . However, if I'm landlocked, I would prefer to bass fish too along with other by catch like pike/musky/wall eye that can also be caught while bass fishing

It’s a somewhat large fish that can be found anywhere in the US. Also won’t attack everything, I was getting really frustrated this past weekend putting every kind of fly lure (various streamers and top water poppers) right in front of a few I could see in the water without any takes. Eventually got one by doing a retarded dry dropper rig of a frog popper with a bead head wooly bugger 6” below it. Don’t scoff it until you try it, since it was the only thing that got a take. Unfortunately it broke off just below my double surgeons knot… and I was just watching the god damn frog popper going around the pond afterwards and trying to get the same fish again. All barbless so I’m hoping the fish can spit it out and not die so I can get another shot at it. I even cast out and caught the line underneath the frog popper later that day and fought the fish but it went running and the hook got lodged into a branch somehow after the fish went under it. Sad day and lesson learned to use larger tippet while targeting bass until I get better at hooksets and not breaking off within 3 seconds

get a size 4 cabellas starter rod and stick with floating line, the leader and tippet will sink just find and it will do you well in the prime season when you are trying to catch them top water (the most exciting). If you want to go for bigger fish get an 8 weight but I would start with a 4. Get some Chartreuse wooly buggers and some poppers and learn how to use them well. You will be slaying bass like a pro.

Pretty meh, IMO, the pflueger President inline has better drag (but way too high of a return speed, incidental contact with your hand can spin it enough to take your lure a foot out of the strike zone).

Actually I haven’t found an in-line that I actually like yet and I’ve tried 5 of them (Black Betty, President, Trion, Piscifun something or other, and Eagle Claw, more if you count fly reel style inlines). The Eagle Claw at least has the decency to be cheap and compromised instead of just compromised. Maybe the Custom Shop Black Bettys are good, but I’m not paying that much money to avoid having to put a swivel between my mainline and my leader. I’ll ice fish with a baitcaster like a lunatic first.

Question about Huddlestons. I was fishing with an 8” ROF5 yesterday and it wouldn’t sink unless the line (20lb fc) broke surface tension. When it finally submerged it was extremely slow to sink and kept coming back to the top on the slowest retrieve. I’ve fished with the 6” and 68 in an ROF5, those seemed to stay on bottom no problem. Do you think I got one that wasn’t marked/packaged properly? Or should I just go to the 12?

I wish I hadn't broken My bag so I could actually do a proper side-by-side but it feels pretty similar. Maybe a hair faster, but really similar. The pictures on the website to show the action really don't do a great job showcasing just how zippy these blanks are. I might get a white 8 weight blank and actually make a fly rod out of it to replace my BAG. But fir the blanks i have I just ordered in my hardware last night, I'm excited fir this 4 weight, things gonna be like a little 7'6" 2 weight micro switch. 'Don't mind me, just two hand casting my 7'6" 4 weight with a 3 inch streamer on a 1x leader for smallmouth'

I've got high hopes for my hyper finesse v2 as well. If it turns out right there's a guy who was on here who's bought jigs from me who might buy a copy of it.

They are annoying, especially the larger ones. Scale the smaller ones (makes it easier to cut a nice fillet) and cut off the fillets, then skin them cos the skin is pretty much leather. Don't bother scaling the larger ones and just fillet them and skin them afterwards. A good sharp knife helps

Smallies tend to like deeper water in warmer months, moreso than largemouth. Look for rocks, wood, any structure in the water and fish near it. That’s not to say they won’t be in 3 foot water with weed beds/lillies with largemouth though. One of my go to spots on my lake if getting skunked is like 2-3 feet of water, weeds and fallen trees and I catch smallies and largemouth both there all summer no problem. If anything I’ve noticed the monster smallies will go deep end of June-August but it isn’t always the case

I double checked the packaging and it was marked as a 5, but I think it was mislabeled and is a 0. Striped bass are still holding really deep here in Southern California. Just gonna get a 12 and use that until it warms up a bit

If you live in an older part of the USA, stocked trout provides a freshwater meat fishery. If you want clean water you either have to fish a drinking water reservoir (which a lot don't even allow fishing) or go fish in the mountains (which is typically C&R and small brook trout anyway). The two main watersheds near me are polluted from the remnants of industry, stocked trout provide a safe fish to harvest.

True. Most of the rivers here were the dump site of all chemicals during the industrial revolution and still have consumption advisories for mercury. I would only eat fish out of headwaters and spring fed ponds. I'm wary of even eating hatchery fish because who knows the quality of the feed they are given. I would assume very low. A hatchery fish that's been eating a wild diet for a few weeks might be better.

Stick to 20 pound flouro, don't listen to the other anons. You need that strength to set the hook. For the 68's and 6 you can move down to 16 pound flouro, but 8", 20 pounds. If you need to make a huddleston sink faster, simply take nail weights and put them in the cheeks of the bait.

I exclusively only buy ROF 5's and tune them to my desired sink rate. When I want them back to ROF 5, I pull all the nail weights out. Really easy mod to do.

It really comes down to what kinds of lures you use the most. A medium light rod is more versatile than your typically recommended medium or medium heavy, because you can even downsize tackle and target other smaller species without terrible casting performance. If you haven't already bought the reel, A Shimano Sahara FJ or Daiwa Legalis LT is similarly priced and about as good as it gets for the price. As for rods, here are some I recommend.

any of those will be far more sensitive than an ugly stik. money not an issue, the TFO is the one to choose in terms of grip ergonomics and having a more unique rod blank with it being moderate-fast. it also has a lifetime warranty, I'm pretty sure that even if you break it doing something stupid, they will only charge you half price and you get a replacement. I have the 703-1 and love it. It's the best "if I could only have one rod" I've found yet. It loads up 1/8oz lures good enough to get distance, and when you throw 1/4-3/8oz lures it really launches them.

The Daiwa LTs have very deep spools, so a 3000 holds noticeably more line than your average 4000 reel. for freshwater, the newer blue Legalis LT is a good choice, or a Shimano Sahara FJ is even a bit nicer, but a little heavier. You really don't get much more if you go up to the $100 mark for Daiwa, unless you're going to a BG instead, which is much heavier due to aluminum body.

LOTS of big reds, I got a double of 3-5lbers, but I saw about 5 or 6 that got brought up that were 8lb+. Not sure if they’re still around like 5 years later, but these Culprit Incredi-Craws were really good. IIRC there is/was a slim version too so you don’t need a giant hook. They have long antennae that dangle and do a really good job getting interest from the fish.

There was one other brand that uses the Z-Man plastic I swear, but I can’t remember. My favorite fish type softbaits are the KVD Perfect Plastics paddle tails, those ones seem to last a ton of hook sets. I thought Yamamotos were pretty long lasting too, but I don’t go fishing anymore so who knows.

I always liked Zoom’s plastic, it’s not the greatest but it seems to be in the top 1/2 or 1/3 and they’re affordable with a huge selection.

Fly fishing's always been interesting to me, but I've heard the only real way to learn to cast a fly rod is from another fly fisherman and I don't know of any in my area. If I did get into it I'd probably bankrupt myself on materials instead of pre-tied flies.
