What questions should I ask my local DNR about this?
I'm over the age limit for any hunting education course they offer. I'm tired of blasting paper targets. Will the DNR give me some maps of lands I can go small game hunting? I don't want to join a hunting club... because I'm not blasting deer with handgun or 10/22.

Yeah just hit the local fish and game and ask if they require a hunters ed course to be completed before you can start blasting. It's their job to inform you and most of them are excited to do it. Also eat your kill or go fuck yourself

I get the desire to hunt

But killing a poor starving wild animal will not make you feel whole and complete.

Go to local slaughter house and drive a bolt through a cow's skull and help provide food for ~1,000 meals.

Not a rabbit or squirrel

Call or check your state's website. Most of the time small game like squirrel is a single cheap license. There will be seasons, bag limits and possession limits to adhere to as well. Check the regs.
They might not have a map to offer you but there's tons online or through apps like OnX etc

Turkey magnum hardcast lead no.4 for the really long shots, steel no.1 otherwise. I carry each when squirrel-hunting. You can probably see maps hosted by government/state websites with a bit of googling and the information pertaining to these maps by visiting your local wildlife management's website. Generally if the public land's around more water than a creek you can't legally use lead shot and riverside public land generally won't allow centerfire either.

Squirrel tastes like shit and there's a reason we domesticate shit like cattle, instead of something like bison,because it mogs most meat. Everyone having to deep fry their squirrel nuggets to make them palatable isn't actually a testament to their amazing flavor. You can take any cut of cow and put salt and pepper on it and throw it on a grill and it'll be good. You can't say the same for most animals.

DNR, as in Wisconsin? Pretty sure you just need a small game license for squirrel in Wisconsin. DNR will tell you the rules.

Where do u live some states allow you to kill small game on your land without a hunting license other go to a gas station that sells hunting licenses and get one during season

Be careful. Here some guy killed a few in his yard with an airgun. Turns out a guy across the street fed them with the birds. He found out two of his "regulars" hadn't been around. He found out the other guy was killing squirrels. Well that guy paid the hunter a visit and shot him 6 times with 00buck. So if you are going to hunt squirrels, get your small game license and go to a state wildlife area/Nat park and have fun. In town, not smart.
