How essential are the 10 essentials really? I understand some of the stuff, but why do I need to carry emergency shelter rather than just having rain gear/insulated layers for conditions? Why do I need to carry a flashlight or headlamp if I'm not doing overnight shit? Why do I need to be able to start a fire if I'm not bringing a gas stove when my state has a burn ban and doesn't even allow alcohol stoves outside of designated fire rings at designated campsites?

The list was started by the Mountaineers, an old timey hiking group that hiked some pretty rough places. The idea is to be prepared for emergencies, such as unpredictable weather or hikes that accidentally go well past sundown. Some things are regional specific, like wind protection. On a mountain, yeah, you might need that. A headlamp is pretty universal. Fire is for emergencies in really cold weather. So on and so on.

Because you might have an accident or get lost. If you fall in a river and twist your ankle, you're going to be glad you have the means to erect a shelter and create a fire, while using your headlamp to see what you are doing at night.

So basically consider it for how things could go wrong, but don't treat it as a hard rule? My main frame of reference on a lot of stuff like this was growing up around a preppers who, looking back, were definitely heavy into gearfagging.

Yeah pretty much. Like if it’s summer time and I’m at low elevation, I’m not too concerned about rain. I’ll pack rain gear if it’s forecasted, but if it’s a 0% chance I leave it at home. But on the rare occasion that I’m at high elevation, I bring it anyway.

Some things are really small and compact, like a mini bic for fire or Aquamira as emergency water backup. It’s not like you’re lugging way too much shit. My emergency shelter (again, only for really long day hikes) is a small 1.6oz silpoly tarp. I think the entire thing is like 11oz. I wouldn’t spend a night under it unless I absolutely had to (it’s pretty small), but if it was raining and I was lost, then yeah, I’ll curl up under it.

The Mountaineers 10 essentials have been the target of derision for decades, but if you're doing mountaineer type shit in the PNW the list makes perfect sense. You might live a lifetime climbing peaks and never need a headlamp or an extra snickers bar but it's a good idea to quickly go down the list and take what might save you.

Yeah it's all a good thing to have in the PNW where shit can get rainy and cold on a dime and you can't always see the weather coming in (and forecasting is still not as accurate as it is elsewhere.)

Depends what biome and season.
No point for me to bring emergency shelter when the environment is a natural shelter everywhere. Literally a tree will protect me from rain or wind or sun.
If there's one thing I'd always bring it's water and emergency med kit.
Had to use med kit a few times, not life threatening situations but it still saved the day.
