In order to make an accurate guess about the terrain you see around you and terrain on the map, you should orient your map. You can use the compass and take into account declination, or you could match the map up with a north. I'd leave that up to you. Until you have a gameplay for cross country travel, ignoring declination is okay. you can make an educated guess about the terrain you are on and find similar looking terrain based on reading contour lines.
Obviously this is going to be difficult. At this point you should start making notes, you will probably find multiple places on your map that could match what you see around you. It would be best to your theory by trying to find an obvious hand rail (hand rails can be a river, trails, roads, power lines, mountain ranges, etc.) take a bearing from where you think you are on the map to an obvious handrail on the map. Account for declination.
This gives you a real world line from (maybe you) to (maybe) a pond, lake, river, mtn range, etc etc.
