Here’s an example. You just finished the GSMNP section of the AT. It’s ~71 miles, so let’s say 4 days. Where’s the nearest place to resupply? You don’t know, and the trail doesn’t pass through the parking lot of a Piggly Wiggly every 5 or so days. You have to leave the trail and get into town (sometimes just a short walk). Where’s the grocery store? What time do they close?
