I’m always the only person who has a day pack and proper gear and hiking poles. I feel like everyone looks at me like I’m crazy WTF do I do it’s honestly embarrassing.
.
I’m in Ontario so that could be why but some of the trails can be over 20 km and a lot of them have ice on them.

Maybe you don’t need all that. My grandfather would carry nothing but a small tarp and some snacks on a lot of his long hikes in the PNW. He would drink from creeks and springs. When night came he would wrap himself up in the tarp and sleep for a couple hours.

I am the same, I research things before jumping into it and in my groups I become the navigator, the doctor, the mcgyver etc.
Maybe they are looking at you with envy.

I’m embarrassed because I’m the only one who is decked out with gear (not really) but at the same time I’m not super insanely experienced so it’s embarrassing

People expect me to be super brave or skilled with an f load of technical experience just because I have walking sticks and mild crampons and a backpack

Also there aren’t really many bears in these parts, but that doesn’t mean I won’t see one. It’s still embarrassing Carrying bear spray, I’ve literally never seen anyone else with it even the rare “equipped” people

I’m not cocky just feel like I stick out like a sore thumb and I feel like a weirdo cause I go alone and no one else seems to especially not my age

You just know how you perceive or angle the looks because you're insecure.

Yeah intelligent and prepared people stick out, they're called crazy often but you're probably getting the looks of mirin.
They're seeing a guy on the trail decked out with top of the line walking sticks and that gives attention.

You think if an alien walked past you on the trail with nano saberlaser walking sticks you wouldn't stare at it in awe?
You wouldn't look down on it for being a weird rich nerd but maybe that alien might feel silly for being out of place.

I feel like everyone around me is lazy and no one goes hiking except for 5 mins to see some viewpoint.

I typed that post with the assumption you where a dude. This will sound sexist but you cannot convince women to not be afraid of the unknown. It’s hard wired, and that’s not a bad thing. It is what it is. I recommend trying to leave your comfort zone and doing more and more outings. Eventually through your experience you will learn exactly what you need and don’t need. Good luck.

Walking around with bear spray on hiking trails in Ontario is pretty pointless. Black bears want nothing to do with you. It might make sense if you're going somewhere remote and cooking food and stuff, but it sounds like you're just on heavily trafficked trails which bears avoid like the plague.

I just looked it up, and a total of 3 people have been in killed by a black bear in Ontario over the past two decades. When you consider how many miles have been hiked, that's basically equivalent to getting struck by lightning.
