i'd check this out first, dnr honestly isn't a bad resource and if nothing else, it is nice to learn a little of the natural history of the area:
http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/programs/camping/index.htm#Sites^they classify camping by site type, and while it fucking sucks that you have to pay $6 to camp at a "primitive" site, which still isn't really /that/ wilderness-y, it's better than nothing. i've heard good stuff about some place called kettle moraine state forest, up by milwaukee i think? anyway, i wish you luck in your search. i'll probably definitely be back if i dig anymore up, the sons and daughters of the land of lincoln have gotta stick together.
