Its hard to do any big /out/ on horseback since everything is fenced off and farmers will cry and shit and piss and moan if you open a gate or go on their land. Sadly the days of saddling up and riding west until the sun sets are long over.
Tschiffleys Ride is an incredible book about adventures on horseback, probably the best in fact.
