>>2563371The mop fly was invented by the guide in NC that wrote Casting Angles. It can imitate a crane fly larvae, cased caddis, or grub.
In reality, it imitates nothing. We don’t know why the fish eat them. Same thing with shit like a red dart or a blow torch. There just patterns that attract fish with size, movement, and color.
Sometimes the mop works well. Sometimes the fish totally refuse it in favor of another fly. It’s not magic.
People use mops as a crutch and the results are predictable. They have good days under specific circumstances, but average out to mediocre fisherman.
I started euro nymphing about 6 years ago when I got invited to do competitions. It’s just another tactic and you use it when you need to.
I’ve caught 20 + inch fish euro nymphing. I’ve caught them on streamers and dries too. If you present the fly properly, large predatory trout will eat like 9 inch fish will. There’s no magic tactic. The water and conditions dictate what I do.
It’s lame seeing these douche bags jump straight to euro nymphing, but fuck them. I wish these assholes would go back to golfing.
Euro is good for competitions where you’re trying to catch as many cm of fish as possible. That being said, people who start with that tactic because they think it’s a cheat code will always be mediocre anglers.
Want to fish salt? Want to fish lakes for bass? These douche bags will be at an extreme disadvantage.
It sucks seeing the sport going through one of it waves, but it’ll die soon enough. These people will get bored or give up.
