Frpm my experience I think gnats are attracted to some scents potentially carried out from indoors and a diet high in starch/grains can make you more attractive to all kinds of bugs... I had a similar problem with mosquitos a few years ago but I think with exposure therapy and change in diet I've become less attractive to them, I can walk around the woods near the river with no shirt and shorts and only get bit occasionally if at all nowadays

Though keep in mind gnats are part of being out in certain areas and on some level you'll just have to get used to it, but it will probably get better

I didn't have bug spray once and remembered Yarrow was supposed to help, not sure why but it floored me. Now I mix it with other flowers so I don't stink like Yarrow.

Gnats are attracted to carbon dioxide. While walking, turn around and exhale at the bugs. Then hold your breath and run away for a bit.
