There is really no need to carry a supertool EDC--just keep it in your vehicle if you're not working on something. I carried one for years and never found myself in a situation where I couldn't just walk to my car and grab it--now It lives in my car and still gets plenty of use.

Depends on your definiton of "basic", but mostly preference. I sometimes take an axe in the winter because it makes it easier to split wood. If it's summer and I don't want a big fire I just bring a knife and break dead wood by stepping on it.

Bepis turned me on to the Izula belt carry a while ago, and it honestly does almost anything I could want it to do. I still carry a bigger belt knife around at camp, but if I'm honest, it's more because it's fun to have my big knife, than because I need it for anything the Izula can't do.

If I was the type to baton, I'm sure I'd feel different.

I'm in Eurocuckistan so that won't be an option, unfortunately. It seems like you guys can get a lot of quality knives for not much money over there. The SOG Pillar is $319 over here. I'd never pay that much for one, but $99 is a good deal. Those Cold steel SRK's on MidwayUSA in 3V and San-Mai are a good deal too.

Gerber is known for using a 440A equivalent, Buck uses 420HC (buck advertises this). Comparable materials for sure but even if both buck and Gerber used the same material Buck seems to have a better heat treat. Annealing has a massive impact on steel performance (and properties) and isn't reflected in your chart.
