>>258479The truth is, the type of freedom he was searching for is, for the most part, unobtanium. Even in Chris Mccandlesses journey, he relied on people, or the objects which are the results of the whole of human history and influence, to make it to where he was going and survive while he was there.
While he arrogantly rejected "stupid government and its fucking rules" its those same government rules that allowed his escape in Denali to exist.
His car, the trains he hopped, his boots, the machete, the remington nylon 66 and the ammo for it, the magic bus. Hell, even Denali and the State of Alaska (the boundries, not the dirt) itself are all products of humanity, all existing in their current form because of the totality of rules, both physical and cultural, that bind all of us.
By ignoring the fact that he was, by his very birth, inexorably bound to society and its rules that he knew to exist, he created an unescapable trap for himself, the only end of which could have been his death.
Further, one born into society must grow to a point where they can responsibly leave it, should they so choose. He did not.
Though he was a young man just out of college who could stand on his own within the boundrys of society, his refusal to grow to a point where he could survive without the society, directly resulted in his dependence upon it without his ever contributing to it. He therefore used everyone that did/does contribute to society, all the while whithout truly ever being free.
