Hey /out/,

Starting to venture more into hiking I am looking into some multi-day hikes and have completed an overnight hike but felt vastly underprepared some questions I have are:

- Tent or hammock? I am assuming a hammock is less to carry?
- Most appropriate bag to carry everything
- Best way to carry water (inside bottles, or inside water bladder?)

Keep in mind these hikes aren't anything crazy just 2-3 days through Australian rainforest with pretty standard temperatures

a hammock is actually quite a setup, you need the hammock itself, a tarp, a sleeping bagm probably a quilt and bug protection, and then find a place to hang it. I think if you know your environment and your needs well it makes a lot of sense, but I dont think its the best for a beginner.
A tent setup is pretty simple : tent, pad, sleeping bag. It can be very cheap and light as well. Another good thing about tents is that u'll probably be able to fit someone else too. And I'm sure theyre easier to find used than hammocks setups.

If you're on a budget, find something used with a hipbelt and a frame. I'd say avoid military looking stuff, its actually pretty poorly designed (for our needs at least) and quite heavy.
I personally like old external frame packs, theyre very cheap too (like 15 bucks). I find that. as long as they have a hip belt, they are quite comfortable.

A lot of the carry comfort comes down to how much and how you pack anyways.

I like bottles, they work fine for me. I find that bladders often give a shit taste to the water, and i heard its not uncommon for them to leak.
Bottles are light, easy to use and fill. Again its really a personal preference, but i think bottles are perfectly fine.

Depends a lot on where u hike and all. If youre fine with trainers rn, no reason to change until you face one lol. I like trainers cause theyre lighter than most stuff.
I have dedicated hiking shoes, what i really like about them is that theyre good at preventing my feet from getting wet, but theyre not too sweaty and dry quicly.
That's stuff that youll figure out by yourself with experience. As long as stuff works fine for you.

Theres no ultimate equipment thats best for every hike, there are so many factors. Two different pairs of shoes could be the best for the same trail depending on the weather.

Tent. I go hiking with my wife.
Even apart from that though, I tend to hike with poles these days and an ultralight trekking pole-supported tent is significantly lighter than most hammocks even with a sleeping pad. Finally, you don't need to worry about finding a spot between two trees. That might be easy enough in a forest but can be impossible in a desert, on a beach or at a grassy campsite.

Take the trail runner pill. I wore my Salomon Speedcross on a 14 day Larapinta Trail hike then a month in Nepal (worn every day except for the summit days and high passes where I needed crampons). Durability is less than that of hiking boots (they were proper fucked by the end of Nepal) but worth it for the weight savings.

Tent v Hammock
The hammock if you don't have a tarp, bag, possibly under quilt depending on temps is more of an involved set up. Never a bad idea to have a tent so I'd start there.
Appropriate bag
This is really a question of how much stuff and what's comfortable. Helpful to have your other kit figured out so you know how much volume you'll need, but usually I end up with something between 40-60L to cover all 4 seasons. If getting a bigger bag I would advise that it have some ability to cinch down as an underloaded bag can be uncomfortable. You don't have to buy it there, but an REI or Aussie equiv camp store would be a good stop so you can try things on and they can put weight in it for you. Everyone's got preferences, mine are that I prefer to organize things myself and have the main bag be mostly one big pocket and have accessible pockets while wearing it for little things like water, snacks, phone, etc. I think the only non-negotiable thing is that it should have a good hip belt to distribute weight.
Water
For multi day I prefer bottles especially when I can retrieve from a side or shoulder pocket. Easier to fill from filters as well. I do have bladders but I usually leave them for day hikes, on the bike or to expand water capacity for dry camps.
Shoes
Really depends on what you are hiking around and your feet. I tend to like trail runners or light boots, but will use heavier ones in winter/mountain terrain. Some people hike in sandals. If you are comfy now best thing to do is just try, it's hard to know if something is comfy without doing some miles in it.

I use a hammock with a built in bug net and a tarp. It is extremely light to carry and easy to set up.
If there are no trees I set the hammock up in ground mode and find some sticks to support the tarp..
In the summer I can get rid of the sleeping bag and use a small blanket because it gets very warm here.
In the winter I use a gore-tex bivy and a sleeping bag with a tarp and ditch the hammock.

I just got a 75L bag, haven't actually camped with it yet but with my tent, sleeping bag, mat and water bladder in it, there isn't much room for other stuff. I'd get a nice big pack for multiday.

I think a lot of it is in your head, you feel averse to risk or afraid of what might happen, which is normal. Tools and equipment will just make everything easier. Everything you need to survive can be sourced or made from your surrounding environment, but it takes work and effort.

- A simple bag, any bag really that won't break on you while you are using it.

- A canteen for water, any sort of canteen really, as long it works and won't break while you are using it. Same for your other gear.

- Some iodine or a filter to sanitize and refill your water.

- A tent, tarp, or tools to craft a shelter. Tent is the easiest, tarp and bedroll is lighter and more versatile, bushcraft shelter is the most work but costs $0 and is kinda fun to build honestly.

- Walking stick, I use a survival spear that doubles as a hunting and fishing weapon, can just cut and strip a stuck to your height

- Dry foods that you can add water to, like rice or pasta, even herbs for cooking with wild fish and game

- Extra things like clothes, stakes, cooking utensils, supplies for writing or crafting, seasoning, etc

Water is heavy, you don't want to carry too much water when you can source it from nature while camping.

If you are really worried about the water, then purify it in a filter and boil it or distill it, but iodine is enough for clear surface water.

Not OP but I always figured military gear would have a lot of overlap with hiking/backpacking gear. They're designed for very similar kinds of activities. What specific nuances do you encounter on a hike that a military ruck wont encounter (aside from battle rattle)?

Military packs are designed to hold as much bulky shit as physically possible to carry, comfort is not even considered in their design. Go backpack with a nice suspension pack from Gregory or Osprey and then do the same with a US Army rucksack, the difference is staggering.

sounds a little disingenuous. Do you have experience with military (particularly modern) equipment. Just because rangers will have 80lbs of gear on their back doesn't mean you HAVE to fill the same bag up with 80lbs. And its not like you're using an ALICE system in 2023

Hammock is nice because it comes in handy also when you don't want to spend the night. If I only have one day to do anything I like then I will wake up at 6, drive my car to the woods, hike with my dog for a few hours, unpack the hammock, chill for an hour or two in the woods, eat something meanwhile and come back. But if I were to go overnight camping I would just take my tarp, a sleeping bag and a pad. You can find a stick with ease or just use a pole.

True. Tent is for noobs. Hammock is optional for more advanced. I love my hammock but wouldn't rec it.

Yes. Rested one on gravel once, weight of water was enough for a stone to push through. Mylar isn't magic.
Small like 1-2L bags are fine, anything larger needs reinforcement. I do carry a 10L (S2S i think w/nylon bag) because its useful for camp/hygiene.
Smartwatwr bottles are super common, they even have purification systems designed around them.
You can take one of each and see what works. Water system is a huge personalization thing, many options.

Also assuming that up and down a mountian would require some camping overnight, where do you even start with planning this? At what point does gear become too bulky? I really have no bearing for how challenging it is and I dont want to over OR underestimate what's required.

OP here didn't think this thread would still be going,

I am thinking something along the lines of this hiking pack as it has a zipper at the back for full access, the only thing turning me off it is that it does not have a bottle pocket, this is definitely the style I am after does anyone have some other bag recommendations?

Also as I am Australian I will definitely be taking a snakebite kit but what are some other medical items that are essential to bring?

That is a climbing bag, meant more for carrying ropes and gear than hiking. Not that you couldn't use it for backpacking, but the lack of side water pockets and heavy weight fabric would be a definite turn off for me. I would invest in a proper backpacking bag from Osprey or Gregory or another respected name, they are much lighter, and better designed for that purpose.

Seccond this, a hammock is only made practical by knowledge. You need to know what the weather may be for your setup, need to know knots both how to make strong ones and how to undo them.
With a hammock you're trading weight and size for complexity. Even more true if you want to factor in comfort, it takes a good deal of expertise to have a comfortable hammock setup.

It's a shame REI killed their barrel hammock. Mine is pretty nice and a breeze to setup and comes with everything but pad/bag. That being said I always use my tent, just can't beat always have shelter
