just wanted to shill shotcrete / aircrete construction methods and making dome houses.
With proper planning you can build a series of aircrete domes that will last for hundreds of years, have a high natural insulation value and fairly low construction costs.
Construction with aircrete bricks and slabs is also becoming popular and they are begging to be commercially produced.

Tropical fruits mostly. Can't grow apples, oranges, strawberries though. Was thinking of growing dragon fruits.

There IS an exact answer and metrics, but nobody seems to list them.

Its not generally used because concrete is very expensive, difficult to scale up and suffers stress fractures.

Aircreting is generally reserved for facing uneven and awkward surfaces, as a kind of semi struxtural render. Swimming pools, rock faces etc etc.

For regular structures you almost always go with cinder blocks, which are far cheaper, easier to work with and provide significantly better insulation.
Where more integrity is required, cast cement is used. The next step up is reinforced cast cement. The advantage here is that the cement can cure off site and be installed quickly, where aircrete needs someone spraying for days on end.

Dome houses are a meme, because though domes are the best mathematical container this applies only to liquids or sand etc. No real object can be stacked efficiently in a dome. Even domes don't stack inside domes.... compare that to how well cubes stack inside other cubes.

Cylinder walls are far more common, and you might vault these with a dome, like the basilica in Rome, or a grain silo.

The only legitimate application I see is if your house is built on a hill you might want a cellar parralel to your home, where you would normally just excavate and fit 3/4 precasts then backfill you might instead mesh/aircrete to avoid excavation. You might build the first part of a tunnel this way

Grow a pair. Work early in the morning and around dusk. Work in the shade whenever possible. Mosquitoes also have higher activity around the late afternoon and evening, so you can make provisions.

resident ICF shill here shot/aircrete is nice, and you can DIY a lot if you go into reinforced ferrocrete (rebar and chicken wire)

but personally I would go with insulated blocks with concrete filling and rebar reinforced with an insulated monopiece sandwich roof sealed and tar over the joints.

keeping it very simple and low tech at first. (no MC Mansion roof). straight walls etc

I just set up a raised garden bed made out of sheet metal. Over the past 2 weeks it has turned into a tick magnet where there are ticks all along the top edge and up and down each of the corner posts. I think it has to be the heat from the metal attracting them. Is there anything I can put on there to keep them off the bed so I don't get covered in ticks when i water?

I'm all for ICF. I've seen it used in Canada and Texas [both vastly different weather] One in canada was 5,000 sq.ft and cooled with a 25,000 BTU unit... [yeah that fucking small...]

Texas was 3,000 sq.ft and cooled with a 48,000 BTU [4 ton unit for you HVAC fags]

Canada one had like x3 pane windows while texas only had x2 pane, Canada home was built by a builder and nothing was done cheaply. both properties converted me from stick framing cause its cheap.. to spending more on ICF and good materials. No reason besides something extreme and ICF home shouldn't last 200 years.

[I'm talking about ICF block that has concrete poured in between, not what you posted]

A way that MIGHT work, is that glue trap tape-- put it all the way around your garden 4 or 6 inches above the dirt.

yeah, the thermal mass of concrete and massive insulation are amazing no matter if it's hot or cold. its also great for noise.

So far, I have just prepared a test build for a shed for pump/technical room at my grandpas place. I'm really looking forward to it as we will be testing if we can make a cold room with a heat pump exhaust. heat the shed and cool the side room.
but yeah, I'm convinced. it's rodent/bug/bombproof with a proper door and vents

the picture I posted was just an example of roof boards. the wall would just normal ICF. insulated forms filled with rebar, then concrete.

Another question for ICF anons - for starting out a homestead (assume a property is purchased as just virgin acreage with full land rights because today even the smallest house adds $250,000 to a lot):

If you're developing your property from scratch, would ICF be a way to go? Wouldn't it be cheaper to start with a mobile home, get the property into a revenue-generating state (farming, ranching, etc), and then secure financing to pay for building in a nicer home? (Farm loan, SBA loan, etc for construction or general development)

Ideally, I'd like something for my future children and grandchildren. Traditional American house would be nice (wood, brick, multi-storey)

I would start small, learn, build bigger and bigger. First, you want fast structure to have a place to live and work. So trailer home or a business container like pic related. Just go container for the memes (but trailer home or camper is fine too.)

later this can become the tool/bike/tech/fuel/solar mancave/smoker/pantry/cuck/shed or what ever. no value lost.

the point is to learn the land, where does water flow/pool. where does the ground change, what areas a good/bad for growing. where do you get sun/wind/noise from. Where are you going to place rainwater collectors etc

goal is... dont build ya house day 1 only to find out the nice flat area floods... or the stream you need to cross surges in rain season. etc.

You kind of want to plan your lot infrastructure so power lines/water/wastewater, internet, roads (for equipment and trucks), Fuel storage, solar/geothermal, feed/fertilizer/manure/chemical storage, parking. repair/delivery area, water well site and so on

and the farmland too, water, seep wells, dams, runoff lakes, hedges, trees, access animal management

so I would first live a season like a bum and learn, then plan and build. Test the waters with the permits needed and try to get stuff /plans approved if needed. Check for builders/ companies in the area. Look at materials.

Couple of chicken chicks questions
One, is this suitable for a brooder? Obviously I'll get a lamp and shit in there. I see most folks use a plastic bin or livestock feeder, but since i have this and it's enclosed would it be fine for them? My concern would be with keeping them warm.

I just mean a fence as a frist layer, like next to a highway, looking all normal and boring. Right after the fence should be a high, dense hedge to hide from sight and block any noise. You would want the property to be boxed in by dense bush and high trees on all sides with plants that stay green all year long.

The access should to be hidden in plain sight. Have a dead end visible and the continuation of the road be obscured and to the side.

Have a sharp angle to the road, so you have little time to spot it while driving by.
Cars will need to slow down if they want to turn into the road. A need for Hard braking from traveling speed makes it unattractive to stop on a whim.

Have something normal grab the attention to the other side of the road. But not so much to be a landmark or something. Have people look away to read the shoot up "deer crossing" sign, not at your driveway.

Let the access road have an uncomfortable side slope, people like to stop on flat ground, not some wired angle.

Use lawn pavers or something like bark cuttings to make the ground look soft or grassy from far away yet stable to drive

t might make sense to have fire protection in your area. Enemy or even just seasonal fires might pose a big risk.

Sprinklers might save you, and your house, from getting wacoed by a single Molotov. In the end, it's just a hose and sprinkler on the roof or other important area.

Rainwater tank are extremely useful since you will always need water. Best to have multiple ones. You can even use an empty one as minimally hidden underground storage.

Plan/pre plant some trees and have barbed in a shed wire to go. in actual SHTF you can add an internal see through/shoot through barrier by going from tree to tree and looping the wire. Just takes an hour to have a massive boost. And a zigzag entrance.

You can add an electric cow fence too. The marauders better bring their bolt cutters

place underground tubes like PVC as conduits. run a normal ground wire and water hose through them. no need to drag a drum all over the yard if you can just plug into a socket in your yard with a short extension.

have power and water next to your beds/shed/car park/compost/ wood splitting area etc

at the same time, you can place a heat exchanger for classic geothermal based indoors heating/cooling. or even hippie earth tubes that are a thermal battery + chimney based automatic air conditioning system that doesn't need power.

A broody just needs to contain them and have a spot for them to be warm. Very flexible requirements

The geothermal needs to be at a certain depth depending on your region and system. There are vertical systems too. Some small ones that use a auger and big ones that are like 3 well bore holes and go like 100+ feet deep.

The liquid is often a salty brine or some type of thermal antifreeze type of shit. Not normal water so. Frost should not matter that much. But again depends on the system you buy

you just cap the end for water/electric to seal them. there are special caps, or just DIY it. all leads to a conduit box that you can seal etc. before the main line goes into the house. you just open it if you need to do maintenance or add/remove stuff. otherwise, pretty closed with a spot to drain with a drain.

for the earth tubes, you just use PVC vent caps with a metal grate. and a bug net after. they usually stick out a little bit. there shouldN't be too many things trying to crawl in. #

or you feed the air into an exchanger.

A trench saw is 200 monies per day in my area. You pay for your own fuel. Far faster than a excavator. And easy to use and get a specific depth. Like around 60 cm for pic related. (Unless you want to combine multiple projects into one rental. Like rainwater storage or general landscaping)

Yeah it's best to plan it out all together and trench it all in one go. You can probably guess where you would want camera/lights/ Outlets/ Soundsystem for electric and water/irrigation is not too difficult either. But doing one after the other sucks as you have to find and dig around the old pipes. Or go shallow with electric since ground frost does not matter. Trench water at 90 do electric at 45. Safe enough to just cross over.

I would always Go with gigantic water tanks its never an issue to have to much water. And climate change ain't gonna make it better. And rain water collection is simple and fun probably the next topic I will look at. Together with property Water management and aquifer.

Only other thing to plan for is geo thermal it that's a thing that makes sense in you area

But at that point you can just strip the whole area and cover/landscape it later unless you have like large medow right next to your house

The brooder serves to replace the mother hen’s warmth so every part of it has to fit into that. The chicks are huddled in the hens feather because they have absolutely zero ability to regulate their own heat for a long while. So open air isn’t great.

Honestly, I'm 100% undecided.
the company I work for has large offices in the Czech Republic, Salt Lake City and phoenix, AZ. I was in Tucson until covid. Now I'm doing a 14month subject-matter expert track in the EU office. After that, I will settle down. If i stay with them, I need to be 1–3 days per month in the office, so that limits my range a bit.

Or I move to the Czech Republic and life in the green countryside where my parents are???
Or I change jobs and move to Colorado, where her parents are???

I have no fucking idea

I have a property in AZ, but I'm not happy with it, too flat, a bit too dry, too hot. (too remote for kids long term)
So I will have to get rid of it I guess, I have been using it as a test bed and maybe ill flip it or sell to the neighbor that could use sheds etc.

I would love to revitalize a barren area and fill it with trees turn it green with water management etc. but I'm not sure how viable it is...

So I'm planning / learning / saving until next year.

Kinda sucks as time just flies by. And everything cost more and more.

I'm from Europe but I have US citizenship. Because the EU (and my country, which is a neighbor of yours) is really tightening the nuts I am mostly looking for property in the US. I rank the NE states very highly, mostly because of their demographics and coincidentally low crime rate though.

Yeah, me neither. Where I live (Rhineland) we have forests and rolling hills, I think I'd feel at home at e.g. the Appalachian region or the PNW.
I'm pro 2nd amendment and open carry but I think the US has a huge mental health problem and I want to live somewhere peacefully, that's why I rank NE that high. Plus I like a 'real' winter with snow, I start to melt when temperatures get over 27C/80F (and I have a low bodyfat, so not like that is keeping me low lol).

that why I'm considering the CZ republic too. It's got very liberal guns laws (I'm doing the test this summer if all works out). but the "I can just shoot/hunt on private or even public land out in the open world and not some caged range" of the US is very appealing.

But the in the US social/metal health problems did kinda spook me. sure, the golden cage fenced communities seemed amazing, golf range, good park, pool. and the countryside is pretty nice too. I like it there. an area like the Lipno Dam, Czechia (pic related) would be nice and viable with some office days.

Is getting a well just a scam if you're being frugal?
Around here they start at 10k, up to 80k if it's quite deep. If I want to cut my grid hookup as I'd like to someday, I also have to worry about the sub pump which is over a kilowatt. It seems to be it would be far more approachable to truck in my own drinking water and collect rain for everything else.

I'd like to hike the appalachian and pacific crest trail but I'm currently starting a business / freelancing and I find it hard to take some time off before making some good money. And once I have that I'd probably prioritize scouting for my homestead property.

it depends on your jurisdiction, oregon for example you cannot get a building permit/approved dwelling without a permanent water source (read as: muni water or well, with a sustained rate of 5 gph). it was ~12k for a 175' deep well

so building our place, we had to get a well installed even though we knew we'd never actually use the water (the arsenic concentrations are about 900x the safe limit. and oddly, the state considered lead for potable water, but at the time, ignored arsenic)

we're currently having our water trucked in, it runs about 280 a month for 3 people (3100 gallons).
in the process of developing a couple of springs that are on the property though; for about 10 months out of the year they put out several thousand gallons a day -- and no arsenic.

It's natural; we're in an area that has gold/arsenic (they're often found together) on top of a layer of impermeable clay. So water leeches down through soil with arsenic and settles on the clay.
doing the math on a filtration system it out it shook out to roughly $4k for the initial installation, and roughly $2.5k a year for the filtration media. =/

There's two main species of arsenic; trivalent and pentavalent, pentavalent is fairly easy to filter, but trivalent is a much stronger bond, and much harder to remove from drinking water (we have both, but mostly trivalent). So we just decided to take the well as a sunk cost, and we've been trucking water in.

If possible get the water tested before buying land, or having a well drilled -- if you can. Weyerhaeuser would not let us do a test well prior to buying the land, cunts.

My chickens decided to all lay onthe exact same spot despite having a lot of space to do so. The tiny one got grubby but the other two kept laying eggs on the same spot whenever she got uoout for food. One of them sat right next to her trying to cover the same eggs, so they're sitting together ass to ass.
Now because the eggs were laid as they were being incubated, I have a chick hatching each day, while a chicken sits on the eggs and the other one (the first to get grubby and is now standing) takes care of the newborns.

Sounds like you're looking at pickups which is a stupidly overinflated market of vehicle now. The secret is to start checking the 'heavy equipment/commercial' vehicle used market and buy a box truck/dump truck.

Not only do they hold literal tons more weight and volume so you won't be making 5 trips back and forth especially when we're talking long distance one-way trips, you can find them for under $10k e-z because they aren't daily driver vehicles - they're completely task oriented. Commercial market is always turning over their shit because they can amortize and write off the values and want the newest stuff to work 100% of the time and impress clients.

So stop looking for pickups. First hit in my local market for example; F-700 diesel box truck - runs drives even has a tommy gate - $4000

Imagine you need to clear land without Powertools, you would spend months chopping trees, cutting, logs, dragging them away, chopping roots, plowing. Oh and rebuilding your tools too... You would take months... All while you generate zero food or winter supplies.

Oh you have industrial glass and can use a greenhouse? Oh you extend the growing season by months and increase area yield by a huge amount.

20000L rainwater tank? Or 200m hose you can use from a water tower instead of well and bucket? Oh you can Bridge draught...

Can't lift that 200kg log on your own ? You s modern chain lift.

Can't carpenter your shed ? Use modern construction elements, concrete, screws, etcs

Its not too bad here in Indiana.
Paid 236k for 4 acres with a nicely done 28x48 pole barn house, almost brand new 36x48 pole barn with concrete floors, and a 24x30 garage/shop with a 16x30 hay barn attached in the back. Then was able to get 6 more acres attached for 10k and am in negotiations to get 6 more acres for 11-13k.
Where you live may not be amazing but saying the best job you can get pays 15 dollars an hour tells me you are not even trying. You need to get skills that make you valuable. Instead of bitching about not having money.

I'm making these up on the fly, but if we imagine that maybe 20% of everybody breaks a bone at some point in their lives, but 70% of professional skateboarders have, then it makes sense, because skateboarders are more likely to do shit that risks their bones than the average person.

Similarly, there are many folks who just don't ever get stung in their entire lives because they never encounter or antagonize bees. So it's possible that bee allergies are actually much more common than known (it's also possible that that's the case with immunity to bee venom though, since if you're outside and you feel a pinch or poke but experience no symptoms, you might assume you got a splinter or sticker or mosquito bite and not even report it to a doctor).

As far as the weird data regarding acquired immunity vs. acquired allergy; it likely depends on factors related to your genetic makeup and environment that may not yet be completely understood.

Some folks can do copious amounts of hard drugs to the point that over time they develop a tolerance. Some folks do one bump of coke and have a heart attack.

Just wear your suit and be careful. Monitor any stings you get for symptoms. Maybe keep some benadryl handy if you're really worried. If you ever feel like you're having trouble breathing after a sting call 911 immediately. If you get stung a bunch over a long period of time and start to notice allergy symptoms developing, maybe see if you can get an epi-pen prescription to be safe.

I’ll get an epipen. I did have a bug venom allergy panel that showed I have no allergy, but apparently allergies can be trained or something. I have a good bee suit but online it says all suits are “bee resistant” and you’ll still get stung. I’ve never been stung by a bee just a lot of wasps. Online it says you can go anaphylactic 12 hours after a bee sting. This is crazy.

It's a staged photo. A brush hog will never mow like on the left of a tractor, that's a lawn and was mowed by a lawn mower. The deck is set a few inches above ground but you have far taller than that coming out behind it. That means either he's going too fast, blades are shot, or it's a shitty brush hog. It varies wildly and is dependent on where you live. The best paying gigs are usually ltl linehaul and fuel hauling but you’ll start out working nights. Flatbed can pay decent but can be pretty physical. Check indeed for your location and see what people are paying. It shouldn’t be too hard to find a regional or otr gig that allows you to take home 1200-1500 a week

Google schedule C tax deductions. You can write off all of those expenses from your primary jobs income tax burden.
