Map Making

Hello,
I am looking to hand-draw my own map for these woods I hike in. However, I really don't know much besides things I have read online. It's quite a large plot of land, so I considered subdividing it into sections and then making the map section by section.
I'll start first with a compass and by hand; but, if it becomes too tedious for distance tracking, I will settle for modern GPS comforts lol.
Does anyone have experience with self-made map making? Any useful tricks and tips? Thanks.

get a GPS and start with the highest and lowest elevations.
Record everything as dots
when you have enough dots: connect them

oh, I forgot
round up or down to the nearest 10 or 20 except for hilltops and depressions
this will be your contour line elevation

You should have a goal of how many hectares you are going to map, the scale and the detail. Working with the compass is fun, but it's slow.
I make geological maps, for regional cartography gps is good (1:5000 to 1:50000), for more detail on maps (scale 1:2000 to 1:150) compass and tape measure. I don't know what coordinate system you use, but the simpler the better, in my work I use WGS 84 as datum and UTM as projection.

1.4 A Few Words of Comfort
Finally, some cheering words for those about to start their first piece of independent mapping. The first week or so of nearly every geological mapping project can be depressing, especially when you are on your own in a remote area. No matter how many hours are spent in the field each day, little seems to show on the map except unconnected fragments of information that have no semblance to an embryonic geological map. Do not lose heart: this is quite normal. Like solving a jigsaw, the first stages are always slow until a pattern starts to emerge; then the rate of progress increases as the separate pieces of information start fitting together.
The last few days of fieldwork are often frustrating for, no matter what you do, there always seems to be something left to be filled in. When this happens, check that you do have all the essential information and then work to a specific finishing date. Otherwise you will never finish your map. Detailed fieldwork preplanning, executing a daily field plan and good time management are often the keys to success.
