If you had the choice between to become a wildman or never leave civilization, what would you choose?
>wildman - live in the wild only, cant live near others or interact with them, you have free reign of your domain, no holds bar, yet you're as armed as nature will allow, wood & stone is your tool of choice, lest you wanna "evolve"; if you're hurt or sick, you're dead
<civil - cant be in any actual nature, even a large city park could be too much, an unkempt yard even risks it, you might as well have a phobia of nature
So, what would you choose?

That being said, I love to fish and hunt and do bushcraft, that sort of thing, but farming is honest work and you can make a decent living. You can fish and hunt while also farming, and honestly living out in nature makes this very easy. A lot of people can simply walk outside and then walk directly into the woods nearby to hunt and fish.

I'm going to put a large, house sized canvas tent on a small patch of cheap wild land to sleep in while building a house. They are very sturdy, easy to set up, larger than a small apartment really. Some old school ones have multiple rooms or are set up on wood decks for flooring. They use aluminum or wood frames to hold up the canvas, about the size of a small house or log cabin. This will allow me to hunt, fish, camp, raise a bit of crops and some small animals on pasture for very cheap.

Some people use these canvas tents and don't pay rent anywhere, but a small bit of wild land is pretty darn cheap. A lot of people would just build a log cabin, but would prefer to build a sturdy and tornado-proof cob house.

Yet cob, or mud brick, is the oldest building material. With a roof and a concrete coating, it is waterproof and tornado proof, being very sturdy like adobe. You can also build it from local materials like adobe rather than a wood frame house, which can get destroyed by a tornado.

It also has the same texture and look as adobe, and that is something I like about adobe honestly. It's build on a layer of stone, in a traditional European style, going way back to medieval and tribal times. Looks like something out of LOTR.

Here is a traditional canvas tent, common on the frontier and people migrating on trails or during war.

Of course you can have a larger tent with multiple rooms, and many have a wooden deck flooring and porch as well. The frame is either aluminum rods or hand built wood framing.

It's equivalent to a yurt or camper or similar nomadic shelter, some people live in these for $0 but it's just a temporary shelter while constructing a house on land for my own use case.

meant to attach image, you can use some solar panels and water filters for electricity+clean water. It's pretty cozy with wood flooring, or rugs, and a normal bed and couches/chairs/tables inside. But I'd set up an outdoor toilet. The wood furnace keeps you warm and can be used for heating/brewing/cooking things. LEDs or fire for light.

The secret I used to execute it all:

Working a job and saving money.

I wouldn't want to play video games out in the woods really. Maybe in the long term. I mean I live with a woman already, am building a house for our babies. You know a lot of rednecks live in these conditions already, or worse. Imagine renting out a small trailer, not even a house, and then it's destroyed by a tornado. Now you are homeless and also at the mercy of nature.

There are also actual homeless people that live in their car or live in national parks, living rough is not a good time. Having a nice big traditional canvas tent and some utility hookups is at least comfortable. Better than being homeless in a small tent with no electricity, furnace, or water.

You can just rent a plot in a trailer park.

A lot of people live out in nature in a single or double wide trailer, my girl grew up out in the country on a farm in a single wide, that's just the South and Appalachia.

I think a canvas tent is a better temporary solution than a log cabin when building a proper modern house, but tornadoes here will really destroy wood frame and mobile/manufactured homes. Now a pickup truck camper is decent, but a canvas tent like this is bigger than many city apartments and quieter as well.

A lot of people are living in hard times or struggling right now, some people live in these tents so they don't have to pay rent but can still have a bit of dignity. Meanwhile, I can get a bit of dirt cheap land for like a couple hundred a month to build on. With the right permits and all that of course.

Won't rush things and will build it very sturdy and all up to code, with good concrete coating, then honestly I'd like to build more of these. Perhaps even building villages or building homes for people displaced by tornadoes or homelessness. In the traditional European style which just looks and feels very natural and nice.

An example of more modern cob construction, looks very similar to adobe. I'd prefer tile roofing or green roofing than this rolled thatch, but it looks very nice like a traditional Japanese style. The idea is to make it safe from tornadoes.

it really depends on where you live, more progressive (retarded) areas have an anti-development lean to them. like here, lane co oregon; due to big game migration, in order to build on f2 (impacted forest -- f1 is actual wilderness) land, you need either 80 acres, or an environmental impact study. it's basically an attempt to keep people penned up in towns, and as the population increases, it's going to be harder and harder to escape.

a lot of people get 5th wheels for that purpose, and they maintain their resale value pretty well once the house is completed, if you choose to sell it.

Even in Northern California there are people living way out in the woods farming and living in small homes and trailers. Those are just West Coast rednecks honestly and are not very liberal.

you'll see remote 30+ acre plots occasionally going for $$$ (but again, planning and zoning make living on them a risk. you'd be surprised at the lengths county enforcement will go to make sure they get their beaks wet)

anything smaller and within budget though is going to be way too close to town, and other plots. basically W or whoever will log a huge tract, then divide it into 3-10 acre lots and sell em off. This is what we wound up buying, we're on 7ac, neighbors are on 9ac and 5ac.

BUT due to the shitty planning department, our house is only 100' or so from the neighbors to the north. all that land, and we still have to have people right on our ass (to minimize 'ecological impact' they force dwellings to be clustered together along utility runs and such.)

Thanks brother that's good information. Yeah real estate is a serious investment out West even from overseas, I can see why they would be doing stuff like that to control the real estate market. If you had a patch of dirt on the West Coast from a generation ago, it might be developed or have increased greatly in value by now. I used to work construction jobs and realized that you can save a lot of money by building your own house, and you know these days with all the off-grid stuff, you can hook up your own water and electricity as well. We have problems with water and the grid going out as well, heavy storms and tornadoes, hurricanes down by the coast. It's safer up in the hills, but all that off-grid stuff is an improvement when the government doesn't care about the standard infrastructure.

Hmm, yeah it's going to depend on your local regulations and codes. I mean my neighbors across the creek are not super far off but it's a farm and they live wrapped up in the trees like I do. Just respect each other's spaces and property and have a lot of privacy myself. Pretty small communities so people know each other anyways.

Personally, I know people who are liberal and are just fine, I don't have a disdain for people for how they vote. It's like you point out, there is still corruption and overreach. We have a small government here and a lot of liberties, but we still have corruption and politicians are still politicians.

The further out it is from development, the less it's going to cost in general. If it has little to no development, it's going to be the least expensive. Even having a road to drive on is development.

Land is generally inexpensive down here, and up in the hills it's mostly small farms owned by families for a long time. I've seen some land in Northern California and in the PNW area that's not too expensive, but I think building with off-grid utilitity hookups from the get-go is not a bad idea. Just some random thoughts, seven acres is a lot to work with. Hope it goes well for you brother God bless.
