Hiking across America next week

I'm leaving for a thru hike across the United States in one week.

I plan on posting about it here, and will not be sleeping in a hotel at all during the journey. Have any of you ever done something like this? I'm sure I'll run into trouble I'm not expecting, and a heads up is invaluable.

I started to do it, i hitchhiked. Got stuck in the desert sleeping under a bridge before i finally made it to a bus station and back home. Just stay away from the traveling kid hobos. Its 2500 miles-ish across the USA. There are 168 hours in a week. Youd have to go 14.88 mph 24/7 for 7 days with not a second of rest to do that.

When my parents found out they were gonna have me my dad took like a month off work to bike down the pacific highway from Canada to Mexico. It’s not the same but I think how differently it would be received now if a father left his 6 month pregnant wife for a month long vacation. Funny thing is my mom told him to do it because he would not have the time to sit when I was born and it was a longtime dream of his. Not the same thing per se but do it snow you won’t regret it.

A few years ago a guy on /out/ attempted to walk from Orlando, FL to Portland, OR. He lasted one (1) night.

If you’re serious, then don’t try to just wing it. Have the first two weeks totally planned, the following two months outlined, and a general idea for the rest of the trip.

Logistics are always the hardest part of these trips, especially in rural areas with little public land. You have to stealth camp around people who honestly believe they can legally murder you for trespassing, with the nearest resupply being 200 miles away.

I'd recommend avoiding cities if possible. Are you going east/west or north/south? If east/west, the weather will be quite different whether you're in the northern or southern part, as will the terrain and natural features to enjoy. More public land in the north, as far as I know, except in the northeast.

Pretty funny desu. I have the first week and a half(ish) planned out, and a general idea of everything after that. Never done stealth camping, so it will be interesting getting shot at for having a fire. I've done week long water fasts while working manual labor before, so I'm not too worried when it comes to food. Water is my main concern.

East coast to west coast. Since im starting so late in the year, im going to try and stay north for a while, then sharply dip south for the winter time. May have to spend a few months in texas or something, as I dont want to hit the rockies in the winter, and I am absolutely terrified of the south west deserts. Not looking to run out of water with 700 miles of flat sand in every direction.

I cycled across solo. it was great. The distance between town and water sources will be an issue when you get out west prepare to have to carry multiple gallons of water after texas.

Also, a ways past Richmond. May have to stop for a day or two. Boots were soaked through, and it was actively raining, so I decided to go barefoot for a while to avoid the inevitable consequences of walking long distances in wet boots. Unfortunately, I succumbed to the natural consequences of walking barefoot within a ten mile radius of a paved road.
For fucks sake, I was thirty yards into the woods. How the fuck did broken glass get out there?

I did a mini attempt of hitchhiking the west coast. First freight train I hopped on backed up into the yard, so I grayhounded it to Vancouver, hitchhiked to Seattle, had a relative drive me to Portland, then hitchhiked to Crescent City CA. Bring good shoes and not-thin socks. Pack light. 1.5L water container, top it off at any opportunity because you don't know your next source of water, offer to buy a coffee or lunch if someone gives you a long ride, don't hop moving trains because you will get hurt/maimed/killed through misjudging the speed and weight.
