Growing up in concrete housing, going to school in a concrete building, growing up and getting a job in a concrete building, continuing to live in a concrete building as an adult, having all your friends live the same life.
Their early life is just conditioning them to live a life void of nature, the forest being an unexplored terrain to them.
The mockery of others is a common defense mechanism to have them avoid something that frightens you, by laughing at them you make them feel ashamed of wanting to do what scares you meaning they'll be less likely to suggest it again, so instead of just admitting your fears you have the other person end up feeling ashamed and stupid.
Since they haven't explored nature it becomes an unknown terrain, and the fear of the unknown is one of the most basic fears.
