Runners as in trail runners? I wear muck boots when raining but I hate them, I want something lighter that goes over the ankle so I don't get tons of debris on my feet when wearing shorts.

just whatever you find comfy for a 14 hour day. honestly I rarely see people in shorts because of the bugs and dirt and shit that assault your legs

That's basically what I wore when I was doing forestry work, if you find a nice pair that's some sort of water proof/resistant they hold up rather well.
They work well in moist conditions, but if it's really wet just go with mucks imo

if you're wearing pants then you won't notice said protection. I wear some lower merrell boots while hiking and working and I find that shit very rarely gets in them.
